Charlie Waller Trust We're talking mental health. Training and resources for young people and those who support them.

We aim to:

– equip young people to look after their mental well being
– help people to recognise the signs of depression in themselves and others so they know when to seek help, and
– ensure expert and evidence based help is available when people need it. We do this by:

–delivering talks to young people and those who work with them about how to stay mentally well
– providing training to teacher

s, health care and other professionals in identifying and supporting those with depression
– supporting research and teaching in evidence based therapies at the Charlie Waller Institute at the University of Reading

Thank you to everyone who joined our webinar, How to manage your wellbeing during times of change and uncertainty.

Keeping well at work isn’t just about what we do individually – it’s also shaped by the people and environment around us.

In the webinar, we explored some of the key factors that can support wellbeing at work, including emotional regulation, positive thinking and cognitive reframing, as well as team cohesion, leadership support, role clarity and psychological safety.

One key takeaway was the importance of meaningful relationships. Good connections at work can help buffer against stress, and in remote or hybrid workplaces, this means being more intentional about how we stay connected.

Small changes in how we work, lead and support one another can make a real difference.

Our next workplace webinar is on 10 June: How to have conversations about mental health at work.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re saying a heartfelt thank you to everyone who gives their time, skills and care to support the Charlie Waller Trust.

This year alone, our volunteers have already given more than 700 hours to the Trust – helping with everything from events and fundraising to packing resources and supporting behind the scenes.

Your warmth, generosity and commitment make a real difference to our work with young people, families, schools, workplaces and communities.

A special thank you to our office volunteers, events volunteers and fundraising committees. We’re so grateful for everything you do.

Art that keeps giving. Looking for a meaningful way to capture a loved one while supporting young people’s mental health?

Following our first art exhibition at the Mall Galleries last year, portrait artist Mia Worlidge is offering a limited number of professional portrait commissions, with around £1,000 from each portrait donated to the Charlie Waller Trust.

Mia is a professional portrait painter, artist and musician, trained in Florence in Old Masters drawing and painting techniques from life. Her portraits are shaped by “the small moments shared between artist and sitter that make up the person’s spirit.”

Mia says:

“The Charlie Waller Trust has been such a source of inspiration for me, and I am so honoured to continue to contribute in any way that I can.”

Low mood in young people can be hard to spot – and it can feel difficult to know how best to respond.

Our recent webinar, Low Mood in Young People, explored how Brief Behavioural Activation can help young people take small, meaningful steps towards feeling more connected, motivated, and supported.

The session brought together people supporting young people in a range of settings, with 301 registrations from educators, healthcare professionals, parents, carers, family members and those working or volunteering in community roles.

Feedback from attendees was really encouraging too, with 93% saying they would recommend the webinar to a friend. Many also told us the session helped them feel more confident and better equipped to support young people.

Hosted by Dr Laura Pass and Dr Hannah Vickery, the webinar is now available to watch back, alongside the slides and supporting resources.

The intervention was first developed by Dr Pass and Professor Shirley Reynolds, former chair of evidence-based psychological treatments at the Charlie Waller Institute, our sister organisation at the University of Reading.

Caring for someone with an eating disorder can feel overwhelming, and many parents and carers are left trying to navigate incredibly difficult situations with very little support.

In this short video, Jenny Langley explains our New Maudsley Topical Seminars for Carers of a Loved One with an Eating Disorder – fully funded online sessions designed to offer practical guidance, shared understanding and a safe space to explore common challenges.

The topical seminars give carers the chance to take a deeper dive into specific issues families may be facing, from meal support to self-harm, autism and eating disorders, and support for male carers.

The sessions are open to parents and carers supporting a loved one with an eating disorder, and are run in a safe, non-judgemental and confidential setting.

Watch the video to find out more.
