The latest report from King’s College London highlights something we’ve long suspected – opioid-related deaths are being systematically under-reported. This matters, because when the data doesn’t reflect the reality, the policies and resources don’t follow.

At The Sammy-sized Gap and through our Yaki Da Boi Project, we don’t just support people day-to-day. We also work hard to challenge systems and speak up where it matters. That’s why we’ve been part of the Welsh Assembly Cross-Party Group on Su***de and self harm and why we’re proud to now hold a seat on the new Lived Experience Advisory Group for the National Centre for Su***de Prevention and Self-Harm. We continue to work with Co-alc Alliance to draw attention to the dangers of co***ne and alcohol. It means our community’s voice is shaping the national conversation.

Today, our friends at Barod announced another stark finding – co***ne-related deaths in Wales have risen by 800% in the last decade. Even more worrying, it’s estimated that around 2,500 co***ne-related deaths have been missed from ONS data. We believe part of the problem lies in coroners not requesting toxicology as standard in suspected su***de cases. Without that evidence, the true picture of co***ne and poly-drug use remains hidden.

We are also concerned that Public Health Wales has been slow to act – reluctant to launch clear co***ne awareness campaigns or invest in proper harm reduction, particularly for rural communities like ours. We know the need is there. We see it every day.

Our work doesn’t stop at supporting those who are bereaved or struggling; it extends to lobbying for honest data, real investment, and practical harm reduction strategies. Change only comes when lived experience is heard – and we’re determined to keep making that happen.
