Alternative Education Provision (AP)

We are a Community Interest Company (CIC), which means we are a social enterprise dedicated to benefiting the community. Unlike traditional businesses, our profits are reinvested into our mission, which is to enhance the wellbeing of young people through an alternative education program focused on outdoor enviro

nmental education and therapeutic interventions. Our program integrates the proven benefits of Outdoor Environmental Education (OEE) with evidence-based therapeutic interventions, designed to cultivate robust coping skills in young people. Drawing upon my Masters in OEE and closely collaborating with clinical psychologists, we have developed a unique Outdoor Wellbeing Award program. I am specifically trained to deliver and administer this award, leveraging specialist training from clinical psychologists and speech and language therapists. This multidisciplinary approach ensures a comprehensive and tailored support system for each young person. Our sessions are grounded in practical, experiential learning within natural environments, fostering emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and reflective practices. We utilise nature connection-based strategies such as grounding, breathing techniques, and mindfulness, all carefully selected to enhance connection with the environment and promote mental wellbeing. Moreover, ongoing clinical supervision from a multidisciplinary team ensures the continuous refinement and effectiveness of our therapeutic approach, further reinforcing our CIC's commitment to delivering high-quality, impactful services. 🌿Real Stories, Real Data, Real Change 🌿📈

When we began working with one particular pupil, their baseline for engagement was just 20 minutes. By Term 2, that transformed into 3+ hours (210 minutes) ! 🌳🧗

But the most important data comes from the voices of those who see the young person every day. We are sharing these testimonials in full to showcase the power of specialist, 1-to-1 outdoor provision. 🛡️🌱

The School’s Testimony (Hertfordshire)🏫📝:

‘During their time at Wild Roots OEE, our pupil has made notable progress in managing and regulating strong emotions and, with support, the child is developing strategies to calm themselves and respond more appropriately in challenging situations, which has resulted in a significant reduction in violent behaviour.
They are now much more able to separate from their parent and show increased confidence in engaging in activities with Emma or an assistant independently.🤝✨

Emma kept the school fully informed about the pupil’s activities, engagement and progress, allowing for effective communication and collaboration to support the child’s development and plan next steps in learning together.’
The Family’s Testimony:🏠❤️

‘Emma has made a truly remarkable difference for my six-year-old SEND child through her 1-to-1 outdoor alternative education provision. The focus was on supporting separation anxiety, emotional regulation, building trust with other adults, and developing social and relational skills.👣🌈

Through Emma’s calm, patient, and thoughtful approach, my child has grown in confidence and is now able to separate from me more easily and spend time with another trusted adult. We’ve seen positive changes in behaviour, a noticeable increase in independence during tasks, and they show greater resilience when plans change, something that used to be very challenging.🔝 -swipe to read more ➡️

What has been especially powerful is how Emma creates an environment where children are excited to learn without even realising they are learning. 🦋🪵My child has developed new skills, become more emotionally regulated, and, overall, is much happier and more confident. Their general mood and willingness to engage with the world around them have improved significantly.☀️🌍

I would 100% recommend Emma and Wild Roots OEE to any family looking for nurturing, personalised alternative education provision. The impact she has had on my child’s confidence, independence, and emotional wellbeing has been incredible and possibly life-changing."🌟🙏

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED — FROM FIRST TRACKS TO FINAL GRADUATION! 🎓🌲

Our hearts are full as we announce the graduation of one of our most resilient primary explorers! Looking back at their time with us, it’s not just about the skills learned—it’s about the Leader they’ve become.

The Full-Circle Moment 🦌
In our final sessions, our explorer achieved a major milestone. They identified tracks in the garden and instantly linked them back to the Muntjac deer seen on their very first visit. Seeing that long-term environmental memory in action is wonderful 🤩

Technical Mastery & Sensory Trust 🎯

Closed-Eye Axe Throwing: A masterclass in proprioception! Our explorer relied on internal muscle memory to hit the target without visual cues.

The Riverbed Audit: Excavating a "lost" safe from the mud, leading a high-level discussion on weight, buoyancy, and "historical discovery."

Economic Literacy: Running the "Clay Shop," crafting detailed burgers and chips to practice functional math and currency exchange.

Physics & Botany 🏎️👑

Hall Racing: Using floor markings to measure distance and linking physical velocity to visual data.

Nature Crowns: A final nature walk to forage for flora, creating crowns to celebrate their journey through the changing seasons.

Emotional Resilience & Mentorship 🤝
The ultimate “Success Stat”? Our explorer has become a Master Mentor. Not only did they process a weekend conflict with calm assertiveness, but they also took their skills home—teaching their sibling how to whittle with total patience and focus.

The Graduation Celebration! 🍕🎉
We ended our time together on the highest note:

The Cardboard Oven: One last woodland feast cooked over a fire they helped build.

The Final Honor: Receiving the Level 1 Fire Safety & Tool Use Certificates.

A Heartfelt Goodbye: Our graduate surprised the team with thoughtful gifts and "Sour Sweet" drink concoctions—a true sign of the deep trust we've built. 🍋😂

The Result: A successful transition into a Full-Time Specialist Educational Setting. 🚀

We are incredibly proud of the hard work and the "Expert Identity" this young person is taking with them. You are ready for your next big mission! 🕵️‍♂️

THE LIVING MILL: HARNESSING TIME AND WATER 🌊⚙️
From the wild streams of the woodlands to the roaring power of a historic Watermill! Our latest Wild Roots mission took our hydrology studies from the woodlands and Ford to a monumental new scale.

Watching our young explorer trade the modern world for the life of a 19th-century Miller was a total breakthrough in confidence and curiosity!

THE MISSION HIGHLIGHTS:

⚙️ THE POWER OF MOTION: We arrived to "Still Water," but the moment the sluice opened, the world transformed! Watching the massive stones begin to turn provided a masterclass in raw energy. Our explorer was captivated, analysing the gears and mechanics alongside the Miller.

⚠️ REAL-WORLD RISK ASSESSMENT: We put our predictive reasoning to the test. When asked if the current was strong enough to sweep someone away, the answer was a confident "Yes." Identifying that invisible strength shows a massive leap in environmental awareness and safety logic.

🎭 THE "MILLER" ROLEPLAY: The old mill became a stage for incredible growth. By being fully submerged in play-based learning, our young person switched between Baker, Shopkeeper, and Miller. This level of relaxed, imaginative play in a public space is a monumental indicator of emotional security.

🥪 THE SOCIABILITY WIN: Perhaps the most "heart" moment? A quiet, shared lunch in the gardens. Achieving this level of calm and presence away from the "safe base" is a huge win for self-regulation and social comfort.

THE IMPACT STATS:
✅ Sustained Focus: Total immersion in the water-floats and mechanics.
✅ 100% Agency: Confident, independent interaction with the Mill staff.
✅ Zero Anxiety: A complete "immersion" in a brand-new environment.

The staff were incredible, and the memories made were even bigger. As the parent said: "We are definitely coming back!"

This is the magic of Wild Roots—building the grit to lead and the curiosity to explore.

We've been busy growing roots in our community this summer! Our whittling and dreamcatcher workshops for the local villages' Busy Week were a massive hit. It was truly inspiring to see people of all ages connect with nature and their creativity. 👩‍🎨🕸️🌹💐🌼

From learning to whittle and shape wood to weaving willow branches for their dreamcatcher hoops, participants crafted something truly unique. They used natural materials like feathers and string, and we even had a little extra fun with glue guns, adding things like buttons and flowers. 🌹🪵🧵

Thank you so much for having Wild Roots OEE CIC
