People using Greater Manchester’s tips will need to prove they live in the region under new rules being introduced in 2027 – despite fears from a councillor that it could lead to long ‘passport-style’ queues.
The new checks will be rolled out from New Year according to a Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) report, apart from in Wigan which is not part of the region’s waste disposal authority.
It means anyone trying to dump rubbish at a tip will need to show a driver’s licence or other type of document confirming they live at a local address.
The move comes amid fears that dump closures in neighbouring counties are pushing people to travel to Greater Manchester and use its recycling centres for free.
The GMCA report about the new rules stated that the change is expected to begin from New Year 2027, with an initial ‘soft’ launch.
During the initial introduction of the checks, people will not be turned away for not having proof of their address, the GMCA report said, but they will be issued a reminder to bring proof on their next trip.
