Todmorden, a small town in northern England, did something radical in the late 2000s. They planted free food on every scrap of public land they could find. Outside the police station. Around the train station. In front of the town hall. Along the canal. Anywhere a seed could go in the ground.

No formal programme. No government budget. Just volunteers, shared vegetable beds and a simple idea: if the land belongs to everyone, it should feed everyone.

They called it Incredible Edible, and it spread around the world.

The model is almost embarrassingly simple.

Public land becomes a place to grow, learn and share. Residents pick what they need. Children see food coming out of the ground for the first time. Communities reconnect around something as basic as a tomato plant.

And the police? They kept the garden outside their station too.

This is exactly the kind of thinking we need everywhere right now.

Cities full of edible landscapes instead of ornamental ones. Streets that feed their residents.

Schools, hospitals, office buildings surrounded by food and biodiversity instead of mown grass.

Imagine if every Belgian, Dutch or European municipality adopted this. One food forest per neighbourhood.

One edible street per city. One community garden per school. The impact on food access, mental health, biodiversity and community would be enormous, and the cost would be almost nothing.

This is exactly what we design at Commensalist, edible, productive landscapes that feed people and restore nature at the same time. ๐ŸŒณ

So. Food forest next to every police station. Who is in?

A little favour that could make a big difference... ๐Ÿ’š

When I took on the role of promoting Mottram Show, I have to admit I underestimated just how much time and effort goes into spreading the word!

One thing I've realised is just how often people say about local events, "I didn't know it was on" or "I hadn't seen it advertised." It really highlights how important it is to keep reaching people. Promoting an event on social media takes time, but it's incredibly rewarding to see so many people coming along and enjoying everything the show has to offer.

We know there are still people who may not have seen Mottram Show advertised yet, as well as previous visitors who may not realise the show is just around the corner.

So, if you see this post, we'd really appreciate it if you could like, share or tag someone who might be interested. Every share helps us reach someone new and reminds past visitors that Mottram Show is back. Every share really does make a difference โœจ

And this doesn't just apply to Mottram Show. Whenever you see a local event being advertised, please consider sharing it. So many community events are organised by volunteers and supported by people working hard behind the scenes and a simple share can genuinely make a huge difference.

We can't wait to welcome both familiar faces and first-time visitors on Sunday 16th August 2026! ๐Ÿ’š
