The current WI resolution is ‘Bystanders can be Lifesavers’ and tonight Naomi Issitt from the OurJay Foundation came to talk to us about the work of the Foundation and how to administer CPR as a bystander.

Her talk about the Foundation’s work was inspirational - set up in memory of her son Jamie who sadly died in 2022, the Foundation installs publicly available debrillators and is campaigning for , so that all police vehicles carry defibrillators - a police car was first on scene to Jamie but couldn’t access a defibrillator and the delay proved fatal.

Naomi demonstrated how to give CPR as a bystander on ‘Joey’ a male mannikin whose head lit up red if you pumped enough oxygen to it through chest compressions. Her demonstration was the best several of us had seen, she was so clear and informative.

Naomi had also bought ‘Phoebe’ a female mannikin, as sadly women are 30% less likely to have CPR administered to them - people are worried about touching their chest. We were able to try giving CPR to both mannikins - it’s a lot easier to administer to the female one, which represents an average woman.

We were reassured that the defibrillator talks us through the process and counts for you when doing compressions. It also won’t shock a casualty if it’s not needed- when the pads assess the casualty it can work out if a shock is needed or not, so we can’t get it wrong.

Naomi also advised us of a recent change - when you ring 999 and speak to the Ambulance call handler say straight away “cardiac arrest, cardiac arrest” this despatches a Cat1 ambulance to you and the call handler then talks you through what you need to do next.

Whoever goes to get a defib from a cabinet needs to take a phone as they will need to ring 999 to get the code to access it.

Thank you to Naomi and her mum Karen for an excellent evening.

Tuesday evening saw our annual Fiona Moore Memorial Curling championship, with nine teams from neighbouring WI competing for the Tunnock Teacakes and bragging rights. Representatives from Binley Woods, Brinklow, Church Lawford & Kings Newnham and Wolston WI challenged the home teams from The Revel to some very competitive matches. The tape measure was required several times to decide winners, and games were played in good spirit.

After three pool games, a semi final and a tense grand final the winners were Brinklow WI, worthy winners as they topped the points scored league too. Winning team members are seen receiving their prizes from The Revel WI President Suzy Denbigh.

It was another fun evening of WI community and friendship, the hall was noisy, fun filled and well fed, thanks to a wonderful sharing buffet put together by The Revel’s members.

Tonight we had our Annual Meeting, our President Suzy Denbigh reminded us of the variety of meetings we’ve enjoyed over the past year. Our programme has been educational, inspiring and fascinating at different points of the year - though we still need to do the experiments about colour with bottles of gin!

Sarah reported on our very healthy financial situation, we’ve purchased our own curling set this year ready for our curling competition in January and subsidised a trip to the cinema for members. We are still in a strong position moving into our new financial year.

Suzy was re-elected President for the next 12 months, which she graciously accepted. Helen is taking over as Secretary and Sarah remains Treasurer.

Following the business part of the meeting Sarah led us in a craft activity to make beaded snowflakes - a very therapeutic activity. In true snowflake fashion none were identical and some beautiful colour combinations appeared.

Next month we will meet on Tuesday 16th December for festive fun, including both a craft activity and a food and drink tasting experience. Visitors are welcome, we start at 7.30pm.

This month we had a visit from Tim Cox, the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire (seen here with some of our members having enjoyed our sharing table of refreshments ).

Tim’s insightful and entertaining talk explained how he got to be the King’s personal representative in Warwickshire, how he works with Royal family members on official visits and the variety of work he undertakes in a given month.

He was generous with his time with us and we asked lots of questions, demonstrating how interested members and guests were in his talk.

Thank you Tim, for taking time to visit us.

Today we ran a ‘Literary Lucky Dip’ at Monks Kirby Midsummer Country Fair , we wrapped preloved but good quality books, identified their genre and then let customers make their choice.

We had lots of interest in our wonderful wrapping and decorated packages - we included a bookmark(with our meeting schedule) and a tea bag.

For £2 per book customers got to ‘dip’ for their choice. We had lots of fun and met some lovely people who were most complimentary of our packages.

We sold lots of books and contributed to the WI Resolution ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ in a most fun way. Thank you to all our lovely customers we raised over £150.

This week The Revel WI had a great talk from Tessa Simpson about the Healing Power of Colour. We were all fascinated by the impact of drinking water that had been stored in different coloured bottles and allowed to stand in sunlight. Several members wondered if the same thing happened with different coloured gin bottles? - further research is needed!

We then shared our sharing table with some rather wonderful cake and sweet treats. We loved seeing some new faces and welcome them to our friendly group.

Tonight we have had a very interesting talk about tracing your ancestry through the female line, delivered by Paul Wilkins. Paul’s talk included the challenge that wife selling could have on you finding your ancestors!

Paul’s encyclopaedic knowledge was delivered with anecdotes to bring the records we could use to life, all very interesting and we could have disappeared down several rabbit holes!

Paul had lots of information for us and we want him to return next year to dive deeper into some of the fascinating stories.

Tonight at The Revel WI we heard from Ginny Davis about the Mysterious Death of Amy Robsart (wife of Robert Dudley). Ginny is such a talented speaker she made a 500 year old questionable death seem contemporary- if there was a culprit, our money was on Cecil! But the contenders were many and unanswered questions many more……… what a fun evening!

Last night teams from Binley Woods, Brinklow, Church Lawford and Wolston WIs joined the two teams from The Revel WI to compete in the annual Fiona Moore Memorial Curling Competition.

They were using the newly purchased indoor curling kit, funded from our share of the Midsummer Fayre fund. Another entertaining evening saw a very close competition once again. The top three teams separated by two points.

The final match was between the two leading teams, Brinklow and Wolston, it became very tense, going right down to the last stone before Wolston took the title and the Turnock tea cakes.

A sumptuous supper was provided by The Revel members and enjoyed by all. An excellent raffle rounded off a wonderful evening of friendly rivalry and WI friendship.

Our December meeting was a Festive Fun Craft evening, Ann-Marie showed us how to make festive Suffolk Puff tags, cards and badges and then Claire taught us how to make 3D stars from an old paperback.

Our Secret Santa this year was for a recycled book, we demonstrated amazing wrapping skills as can be seen in the photo!

And finally we enjoyed a very sumptuous festive bring and share feast with mulled wine before wishing each other a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Neww Year.

A wonderful evening making Suffolk Puffs under Jane’s expert tuition. A great session for our members and the first of three practical meetings.

Our next meeting is a calligraphy workshop, just in time for writing Christmas cards.

18/09/2024

The Revel WI had great fun racing frogs at our September meeting. We also sampled some of our favourite recipes provided by members.
