What was Greenham Common?

For 19 years, thousands of women lived, campaigned and stood together at Greenham Common in one of the longest-running protests in British history.

Many younger people have never heard of it.

Gentle, Angry Women follows three young women as they discover the story of Greenham Common and explore what it might mean for their generation today.

Join us at Studio Moffat on Sunday 28 June for this thought-provoking documentary and discussion.

Meet Justine Aldersey-Williams.

In 2020, worried about the future and frustrated by the environmental impact of the fashion industry, textile artist Justine Aldersey-Williams set herself an extraordinary challenge.

Could she grow a pair of jeans?

Not buy them. Not design them. Grow them.

Over the next few years she learned to grow flax and indigo, spin yarn, weave cloth and sew a pair of jeans entirely from materials grown on British soil. The process took more than 600 hours and resulted in the UK's first pair of homegrown jeans.

This Friday we're delighted to host the Scottish premiere of Woman Grows Jeans at Studio Moffat.

After the screening, Justine will be joining us live online for a Q&A.

Most of us wear jeans almost every day. Very few of us have any idea how they’re actually made.

Woman Grows Jeans follows one woman’s attempt to grow, spin, dye, weave and sew a pair of jeans entirely from scratch.

What the film reveals isn’t the romantic notion of a heritage craft, but the economics of clothing production itself. It took around 600 hours to make one pair of jeans. What does that say about the true cost of the pairs we buy for £20?

After the screening we’ll be joined for a live online Q&A with producer, grower and textile artist Justine Aldersey-Williams, the woman behind the jeans themselves.

There’s something reassuring about sitting in a room with other people and watching a film that asks practical questions about the future.

This Friday we’re screening Kiss the Ground at Studio Moffat — a documentary exploring regenerative agriculture, soil health and the growing movement around rebuilding living ecosystems.

It’s not really a 'save the planet' film. It’s farmers, scientists and land workers talking seriously about land, food, resilience and what happens when soil is treated as something alive.

Tea, coffee and home baking afterwards as usual.
