Our aim is to find out where hedgehogs are present in Mitcham, with a focus around Mitcham Common and encourage residents/local stakeholders to create hedgehog highways and make their garden hedgehog-friendly.

Thanks to ZSL London Hogwatch, we have some trial cameras to survey in gardens. These cameras are set up at approximately ankle height and use sensors to detect motion. When something (hopefully a hedgehog) enters the camera's range, it will take a photo. The cameras are left in situ for 2 weeks, and images are downloaded later. The data from this method is shared with ZSL London Hogwatch.

We have already started re-surveying some gardens from last year and are looking for more gardens near Mitcham Common and Mitcham Road Cemetery. We know hedgehogs are about and want to see where they are going and encourage the creation of a Hedgehog Highway.

We are planning some footprint tunnel surveys on Mayfield Playground/Playing Fields and Pollards Hill Recreation in July. If you would like to get involved with these surveys, please get in touch.

We are also hoping to expand into Croydon in the late summer - more on this soon!

Looking forward to tomorrow 🦔

Today marks the final day of Hedgehog Awareness Week. However, we will continue to raise awareness through our project and are organising our surveys for this season.

We would like to thank Nemca for collaborating with us last weekend, and a huge thank you to the children who have created some fantastic posters!

Hedgehogs' main diet consists of invertebrates—worms, beetles, slugs, caterpillars, earwigs, and millipedes. This is why they are often called Gardeners' Best Friend!

You can encourage this natural diet in your garden by creating a bug hotel, log or leaf pile, or a wild corner, and by avoiding the use of pesticides.

When their natural food source becomes scarce, you can supplement their diet with meat-based dog, cat, or hedgehog food. It is best to establish a hedgehog feeding station and a regular cleaning routine to reduce the risk of disease transmission.

It is also important to provide clean, fresh water all year round!

Hedgehogs build three types of nests:

• Day/Summer nests - temporary and often flimsy structure. Eg. Long grass or leaves.

• Hibernation/Winter nests - Robust and well-insulated. Eg. Within scrub/brambles or log piles with leaves.

• Maternity Nests - Carefully built and secure to raise their young.

You can buy ready-made hedgehog houses, but these are not always suitable and may not be used. Therefore, we always recommend leaving a corner of your garden wild and/or creating a log or leaf pile. This way, the area will benefit not only hedgehogs but other wildlife as well.
