We are incredibly excited because tomorrow is our first-ever Knit and Stitch Social!

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or have never held a needle before, this space is for you. Come join a wonderful group of like-minded people, wind down in a supportive environment, and get creative.

When: Every Thursday from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Where: The Preloved Studio, Canons House & Grounds

Cost: Completely FREE!

How to join: No need to book, just turn up!

Bring along a project you’re already working on, or come ready to learn something brand new. From embroidery and knitting to crochet and slow stitching, we’ve got you covered. Plus, our lovely volunteer Annemarie will be on hand to guide you, offer tips, and give support wherever you need it.

✨ NEW WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT! ✨

We are so excited to host a brand-new workshop this July with local South London artist, Jill Rutter! 🧵💙

If you love sustainable fashion, upcycling, or just want a relaxing, creative day out, this is for you.

Creative Upcycling: Indigo Dyeing & Japanese Mending
🗓 Date: Saturday 11th July
⏰ Time: 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM
📍 Location: Preloved Studio at Canons House, Mitcham
💰 Price: £25 per person

What We’ll Be Doing:
☀️ Morning (Indigo Dyeing & Shibori): Learn how to prepare an indigo vat and experiment with shibori (traditional Japanese resist-dyeing). Create beautiful samples and dye small items from home!
🌤 Afternoon (Sashiko & Boro Mending): Discover the art of visible mending. Learn decorative sashiko and boro hand-stitching to revive old textiles or repair your own clothes.

📌 Quick Details:
Beginner-friendly: No prior experience needed! (Ages 12+)
Included: All materials, equipment, and light refreshments.
What to bring/wear: Bring your lunch and small clothing items to dye/mend. Wear clothes that can get messy! 👕

🏆 What a way to celebrate Volunteers' Week AND World Environment day! 🌍

Last night, we were delighted to attend Merton Connected's Merton Partnership Civic Pride Volunteer Awards, where our incredible volunteers were recognised with the Green Champion Volunteers of the Year Gold Award for their outstanding contribution to climate action across Merton 🎉

A group of volunteers from across our projects joined our Volunteer Manager, Graham, for an inspiring evening of celebration, connection and recognition. It was wonderful to meet fellow finalists, share experiences, and showcase the amazing work being delivered by volunteers across the borough ✨

We are incredibly proud of this achievement. Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do 💚 Their passion, commitment and dedication show the real difference that local action can make — improving our environment while creating stronger, more connected communities 🤝🌳

We are happy to share this information from Energy Saving Trust:
Do you live, work or study in London? Do you like to travel and discover new destinations? If the answer is yes, then keep reading!

We are looking for participants to join a research project aimed at understanding the holiday habits of people living, studying or working in London.

You will answer two online questionnaires between now and November 2026 and, if invited, test a mobile travel app which uses advanced AI to provide customised trip suggestions.

You will be contributing to international scientific research which will support innovating the tourism industry, and joining a community of like-minded travellers, where you can find inspiration and share your travel experiences.

Join us for a friendly, hands-on sewing workshop at The Preloved Studio, brought to you by Sustainable Merton. Learn how to make your own lined zip cosmetic bag from start to finish — perfect for anyone with basic sewing machine skills looking to build confidence and learn new techniques.

Led by first-time facilitator Eugenie Kostikova, this special introductory workshop is just £10!

• Insert a zip with confidence
• Use a zipper foot
• Create neat zip tabs
• Sew a boxed/gusseted base
• Improve your sewing finish techniques

🌿 CALL OUT FOR TEXTILE ARTISTS & MAKERS 🌿

Sustainable Merton and the Preloved Studio, in partnership with Merton College, are inviting submissions for our upcoming Crafting the Wandle Art & Craft Exhibition at Canons House, Mitcham (30 June – 25 July).

This year’s theme is The River Wandle💧 — a unique urban chalk stream rich in ecology, history, community and creativity.

We’d love to showcase textile-based work inspired by the river and its surrounding environment, including:

🧵 Garments
🪡 Visible mending
🌾 Embroidery
🧶 Knitting & crochet
🎒 Textile panels, bags, soft sculpture & mixed-media textiles

Whether your work is abstract, practical, conceptual or directly inspired by the Wandle’s flora, fauna or heritage, we’d love to see how the river has influenced your creative process.

♻️ To support sustainable making, artists are welcome to use reclaimed materials from the Preloved Studio during drop-in sessions.

Each submission should include a short artist statement (100–150 words).

📅 Submission deadline: Tuesday 23 June
📍 Exhibition venue: Canons House, Mitcham
🏆 Visitors will vote for their favourite piece, with a special prize for the winning artist!

🌱🌻This month, 86 streets across Merton took part in our first Community Planting Weekend of the year!

Together, local residents planted over 1,300 plants into tree pits, verges, and front gardens, helping to make our neighbourhoods greener, more biodiverse, and more connected.🐞

Want to learn how to use a sewing machine?

We’ve listened to your feedback and are excited to offer a very special Saturday session of our popular Sewing Machine 101: Beginner Machine Skills workshop — perfect for those who work during the week and can’t usually attend our activities.

During this friendly beginner workshop you’ll learn:
- The basics of using a sewing machine
- How to thread your machine and wind a bobbin
- Stitching straight lines, corners & curves
- Basic troubleshooting skills
- Everything you need to get started on your sewing journey

We ask for a minimum £5 donation to help reduce the risk of no-shows. However, if you’re a Merton resident who would like to attend but can’t pay, please email: [email protected] so we can register you for free
