Breaking: Kirklees finally elects a leader

After two previous meetings ended in deadlock, most recently a 29-29 tie in May, Kirklees councillors have finally elected a new Leader tonight.

Green Party candidate: 30 for, 36 against, 1 abstain
Reform UK candidate: 36 for, 30 against, 1 abstain
Sarah Wood, leader of the Reform UK group, is now confirmed as Leader of Kirklees Council.

It brings to an end months of paralysis since May's local elections left the council with no overall control. Nine Conservative councillors had twice refused to back either candidate, with senior Tory Martyn Bolt telling the BBC "that's been the Conservative position so far, we didn't agree with either candidate, so why would you vote for somebody that you don't agree with." Their stance had left the council unable to meet its statutory duty to elect a leader, prompting a formal warning this week from the Monitoring Officer about a potential Section 5 report and government intervention.
Tonight's vote appears to have finally broken that impasse.

A new collection of artwork created by local students has been unveiled at Mirfield station, as part of TRU’s First and Last Mile scheme.

Earlier this year, Mirfield became the second station on the TRU route to realise the benefits of the multi-billion-pound railway programme, with enhanced customer facilities and a brand-new footbridge with lifts for improved step-free access. Now, customers travelling through Mirfield station can now enjoy a vibrant new display of artwork created by pupils from The Mirfield Free Grammar and Castle Hall Academy.

GOOD LUCK for the move...

BIG NEWS… WE ARE RELOCATING!

We are so excited to announce that we will soon be moving to our new home at:

📍 140 Huddersfield Road, Mirfield

This move is a huge positive step for us and will allow us to enhance and improve everything we already do.

Our new space will allow us to:
✨ Support even more local makers and artists
✨ Expand our pantry of locally sourced food and drink
✨ Introduce our new refillable product range
✨ Continue building the community focused space we are passionate about creating

We truly feel this new location is better positioned for both ourselves and our customers, and we cannot wait to welcome you through the doors.

During the next month there may occasionally be short periods where the shop is closed while we move between the two premises, but we will endeavour to keep 116 Huddersfield Road open as much as possible throughout the transition.

Thank you all so much for your continued support. This next chapter would not be possible without you.

Please keep following us on social media for updates, opening news and behind the scenes progress as we prepare the new shop.

STILL NO LEADER FOR KIRKLEES COUNCIL
Conservative Vote Risked A Green-Led Independent Coalition

The Conservatives (9 councillors) voted against both the Greens (12 councillors) and Reform (29 councillors) in the recent leadership vote, fully aware that their decision could have handed control of the council to a Green, Liberal Democrat, and Independent coalition if two other councillors had not chosen to abstain.

- Did they do the right thing?

- Is this what you voted for?

- Did you vote Conservative expecting to possibly get a Green-led independent coalition?

- What do you think ?

Their choice has meant there is still no leader and it has now been delayed until mid-July.
