Hedgehogs are nocturnal, which means they should be asleep and hidden during the day. If you see one out in daylight, it’s often a sign something isn’t right.
Here’s why it’s a concern:
* Illness or injury – Daytime activity is commonly linked to dehydration, infections, parasites, or trauma.
* Starvation – Weak or underweight hedgehogs may come out searching for food when they shouldn’t.
* Disturbance – Being forced out of a nest (e.g. by gardening, pets, or habitat disruption) can push them into the open.
* Heat and exposure – Daytime temperatures and lack of cover increase the risk of dehydration and stress.
* Predator risk – They’re more vulnerable to dogs and other dangers when active in daylight.
In short: a hedgehog out in the day is often in trouble and may need help. If it looks wobbly, lethargic, or unresponsive, it’s best to contact a local wildlife rescue for advice.
