🚨 Travel Warning – Please Take Care 🚨
Sunday 4th January 6pm.

Due to a heavy hail shower and freezing temperatures, there have been multiple road traffic incidents this afternoon.

⚠️ Known problem areas include:

Thwaites – collision reported

Buckman Brow – currently gridlocked

Grizebeck – hazardous driving conditions

Road surfaces are extremely slippery, and temperatures are forecast to drop further, increasing the risk of ice on untreated roads.

❄️ Please avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary.
If you must travel:

Drive slowly and with extreme caution

Allow extra time for journeys

Check on vulnerable neighbours if it’s safe to do so

Report dangerous road conditions to Cumberland Council

Your safety comes first. Please share this message to help keep others safe.

Yellow Rain Warning: 18:00 Saturday 13th - 18:00 Monday 15th
Amber Rain Warning (Nearby): 06:00 Sunday 14th - 18:00 Monday 15th

An amber weather warning for heavy rain is now in place for our area. Prolonged and intense rainfall may lead to surface water and river flooding, road closures, and disruption to services. Impacts are more likely and could be significant in some locations.

Please only travel if necessary. Avoid flooded roads entirely, as water depth and flow are hard to judge and driving through floodwater may not be covered by insurance. At home, secure outdoor items, move valuables away from ground level where possible, and prepare torches and power banks in case of disruption. Check in on neighbours who may be vulnerable or isolated. Stay informed and take care.

Yellow Wind Warning: 12:00 Tuesday - 06:00 Wednesday
Yellow Rain Warning: 00:00 Tuesday - 15:00 Tuesday

A yellow weather warning for wind and rain is now in place for our area. Strong gusts and heavy rain may lead to localised flooding, reduced visibility and difficult driving conditions, especially on rural and low-lying roads. Please take extra care if you need to travel and avoid any flooded routes.

At home, secure loose items, check gutters and drains, and keep an eye on neighbours who may be affected. Flood damage from driving through water may not be covered by insurance, so planning ahead really matters.

Our full advice and key contact numbers are included in the poster below. Stay safe and look out for one another in Millom and Haverigg.

From Millom and Haverigg Resilience Group:
A yellow ice warning is in place for Millom until Wednesday at 11am.

A yellow warning means β€œbe aware” β€” there is a medium likelihood of ice conditions and a potential for disruption (roads, footpaths, travel).

Specifically for ice: untreated surfaces likely to become slippery, especially overnight or when rain/hill snow clears and refreezes.
It doesn’t mean guaranteed major disruption everywhere, but you should plan ahead and adapt.

Rain and hill snow will move through this evening, with 2–5 cm settling on higher ground. As skies clear overnight, temperatures will drop to freezing, creating icy patches on untreated roads and footpaths.

Please take extra care if you’re out tonight or tomorrow morning. Stick to main routes, reduce speed, and allow extra braking distance. Footpaths, back roads and bridges may be especially slippery. At home, grit steps and paths early and keep outdoor areas clear. Look out for neighbours who may struggle with the cold and icy surfaces. Stay safe.
