Great to see the wee wheelers going from strength to strength!

๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿ’š THIS is Wee Wheelers.

Not an idea. Not just a nice (if we do say so ourselves...) graphic. But a real group of local children getting on their bikes and travelling to school together.

They're moving their bodies before the school day begins, learning how to travel safely, building confidence and independence โ€” and doing it alongside their pals.

For families, it means another option for the school run and a little bit of precious time back in the morning.

For our community, it means fewer cars, safer streets and children growing up feeling connected to the place they live.

And the best bit? Our village is growing.

Whether you'd like your child to ride with us, you're interested in volunteering, or you'd just like to follow what we're building, we'd love to have you here. ๐Ÿ’š

We're relaunching Play Together on Pedals with a new format, designed specifically for children who **cannot currently pedal independently** and are learning to ride a bike.

These are focused learn-to-pedal sessions where children can practise the skills they need to get pedalling, build confidence and work towards riding independently.

Children can attend regularly while they're learning. Once they're pedalling independently, they'll normally have another one or two sessions before moving on and making space for another child.

**This isn't a cycling club or an after-school club.** It's a focused programme to help children learn to pedal.

๐Ÿ“… Sessions will run **fortnightly** and we're hoping to get started VERY soon.

๐Ÿ“ The programme is primarily for families living in Midlothian, with sessions likely to take place in Millerhill**. We may occasionally need to use Danderhall instead if there's an issue with the venue.

๐Ÿ’š **Sessions are free to attend, thanks to funding from SEStran.**

We're taking expressions of interest now so we can understand demand and offer sessions at times that work for families.

๐Ÿ‘‰ **Register your interest here:** https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/7VnJqXKzQr

Please note that registering your interest doesn't guarantee a place on a particular session. We'll be in touch with dates and booking information once we've planned the sessions.

Sometimes you don't know what a ride might lead to. ๐Ÿšฒ

Earlier this year, I led a ride from Roslin to Shawfair with Gill, Priest in Charge at St Matthew's, Rosslyn Chapel, and members of her congregation. We stopped at Straiton Pond for a picnic along the way.

Then this week, I happened to cycle past Gill. She was out on her bike, and told me that since our ride, she's been cycling to the chapel more often, where she might previously have taken the car.

That made me very happy.

Gill is a visible part of her local community, so seeing her choosing the bike for her own everyday journeys feels particularly meaningful. Sometimes people don't need to be persuaded to become โ€œcyclistsโ€. They just need to discover that a journey they already make can work by bike.

It also got us thinking about the chapel as a cycling destination.

There are already people cycling there from around Midlothian, including Lasswade and Loanhead. So could we bring some of those journeys together and create a bike bus to the chapel?

Just an idea for now, but I rather like where one little ride might lead...

๐Ÿšฒ **Sometimes the bike doesn't have to do the whole journey.**

Over the last few weeks, I've been working one-to-one with Rachel to build her confidence and help her explore more places by bike.

One of the things we've talked about is that feeling of *"What if I get there and I'm too tired to cycle home?"*

So this week we tried something different.

Rachel cycled from Penicuik to meet me at Glencorse Centre, and together we followed a route around Gowkley Moss and Roslin towards Straiton, linking up paths and quieter roads she'd not ridden before.

Then we put our bikes on the **X62 bus**.

Rachel had been nervous about this, but with a helpful bus driver and a bit of time to figure it out, it was much easier than she'd expected.

And suddenly, the map gets bigger.

The X62 gives cyclists another way to connect places where the cycle routes don't quite join up yet. Rachel is now thinking about taking the bus from Penicuik to Peebles with her husband, having a cycle around the area and getting the bus home.

We've also been looking at how trains from Eskbank (an easy cycle from Penicuik!)could open up even more possibilities.

Sometimes building confidence isn't about cycling further.

It's about finding **different ways to connect the places you want to go.**

And thank you ! Great service!
