🏡 YOUR VOICE MATTERS 🏡

Could you help shape the future of Melville Housing?

We're looking for tenants to join our Board and make sure tenant voices are heard when important decisions are being made.

The Board helps oversee key issues including rent levels, investment in homes, and the performance of essential services such as repairs. Just now we don't have any tenant members on our Board – and we need that to change!

You don't need any previous board experience or special qualifications. Your experience as a Melville tenant is your expertise.

As a Board Member, you'll have the opportunity to influence decisions, ask questions, challenge where necessary and help improve services for tenants across our communities.

✔ Full training and support provided
✔ Reasonable expenses paid
✔ Make a real difference for fellow tenants
✔ Help shape the services that matter to you

If you've ever had an opinion about rents, repairs or the services we provide, why not put that experience to good use?

Interested in finding out more? We'd love to hear from you.

⚽📢 Important Service Update 📢⚽

As many of you may have heard, the Scottish Government has declared next Monday a national holiday to celebrate Scotland's first World Cup match since 1998. The decision has reportedly been rubber-stamped by His Majesty The King, who clearly understands the importance of these things. 👑😄

The fact that kick-off is at 2am our time when most sensible people would usually be asleep has not dampened the nation's enthusiasm one bit!

As a result, Melville will be closed and staff will be unavailable on Monday 15 June.

Before anyone reaches for the red card... whether Scotland win, lose or require several months of emotional recovery, we'll be back and ready to help from Tuesday as normal.

Emergency repairs will, of course, continue to be dealt with as usual.

Thanks for your understanding, and enjoy what we hope will be a memorable occasion for Scottish football for all the right reasons! ⚽🎉

🌞🌿 Summer’s here… and so is the grass! 🌿🌞

With the May sunshine and recent rain, gardens are suddenly very happy about it — and those outdoor jobs have a habit of sneaking up on us (and then multiplying! 😅).

To help Melville tenants stay on top of things, we’ve got a lawn mower and strimmer available FREE to borrow, just with a small refundable deposit.

It’s quick and easy to request via a form on our website at https://www.melville.org.uk/your-home/looking-after-your-home-and-garden/borrowing-equipment/

And once you've got your garden looking just the way you want it, why not enter our garden contest, just message us to say you're interested ✨🌱

✨ PENICUIK PRIDE ✨

It's a couple of weeks until Penicuik's big Pride event and organisers are expecting this to be their biggest and best event yet! 🎉

For this, their third annual Pride celebration, are once again working in partnership with The Cuikoo Restaurant and Bar to bring the community together for a full day of celebration, inclusion, and fun.

📅 Saturday 13th June | 12 noon – 8pm

The event will take place with access to the beer garden at the rear of the venue, as well as an expanded space flowing into the Wee Park area, where a relaxed picnic zone will be set up 🧺🌿 Visitors are encouraged to bring picnic blankets as well as family and friends to enjoy the day in comfort.

This is a free, family-friendly event open to everyone in the community.

Planned activities include:
🎶 Live performances and entertainment throughout the day

🍦 An ice cream parlour to keep everyone refreshed
💛 Plenty of space to relax, connect, and celebrate together

With the goal of bringing people together and creating a warm, welcoming celebration for all in Penicuik, organisers look forward to seeing everyone there and appreciate all the support that helps make the event possible. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

🏡 A new scheme to support first-time buyers is set to launch soon in Scotland.

The First Homes Fund will offer eligible first-time buyers a £10,000 contribution towards a deposit, helping to make stepping onto the property ladder a little more achievable.

💷 The scheme will apply to homes valued up to £300,000 and works on a shared equity basis — meaning the Scottish Government holds a share in the property, while you own and live in your home.

No monthly payments are required on the government’s share, and no interest is charged. The equity stake is usually repaid when the home is sold.

📊 The fund is expected to support thousands of households as it rolls out.

More details on eligibility and applications will be shared ahead of launch. You can read the full story at https://www.gov.scot/news/first-homes-fund-open-by-end-of-june/

📢🏠 Want your voice heard on issues like affordability, repairs and value for money?

A new survey from the Scottish Housing Regulator found that almost three quarters of tenants are concerned about future rent affordability - and nearly one third have struggled to afford rent in the last year.

The National Panel of Tenants and Service Users helps make sure tenant views are heard at a national level, influencing discussions around housing services and priorities.

If you’re a Melville tenant and want to have your say, why not consider joining the Panel? It’s open to all social housing tenants and service users across Scotland.

📧 You can send a quick email to [email protected] to find out more or sign up.

We know… we did already announce the end of our “30 Donations for 30 Years” campaign 😅

But we couldn’t resist sharing one final visit — this time to the fantastic Nicky Zelent and her team at Lothian Cat Rescue which received one of our £500 anniversary donations.

After meeting some very adorable kittens and hearing more about the amazing work the team does caring for vulnerable and abandoned cats, we knew these photos deserved an outing too!

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make our 30th anniversary celebrations so special over the past year 🐾

📺💷 A little blast from the past for our older community members…

This might be one to mention to parents, grandparents, or anyone who’s kept things 'just in case' over the years.

TV Licence Savings Stamps were closed 20 years ago, but some are still turning up tucked away in drawers, tins and old envelopes at home.

If you (or someone you know) still has any unused stamps, they can still be refunded — but only until 31 December 2026. After that date, the refund scheme will close permanently and no further claims will be accepted.

So it might be worth a quick look through those old hiding spots… you never know what treasures might be lurking! 🧰📦

👉 After 2026, unfortunately, they’ll be nothing more than a nostalgic bookmark in UK TV history.
