Greensand Country

Greensand Country Greensand Country is a beautiful and loved landscape.

It is defined by the Greensand Ridge, a band of higher ground stretching from Leighton Buzzard to Gamlingay, which rises out of the surrounding vales to create a locally unique environment. The Greensand Country Landscape Partnership scheme is led by Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity (BRCC) and the Greensand Trust and it aims to establish the Greensand Ridge area of Bedfordshire as a living a

nd working landscape. By working to reverse the gradual decline in the area’s landscape character, and create a framework to promote the area’s interests and secure long-term financial and community investment, this new project will lay the foundations to help sustain the area’s natural and built heritage.

Would you like to get out in nature and find out more about your local area with a friendly bunch of people this year?

2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the Greensand Ridge Walk. It’s a 42-mile route that follows the top of the Greensand Ridge, from Gamlingay to Leighton Buzzard.

The Greensand Trust have planned a series of guided walks to celebrate this significant anniversary. These 8 walks range between 3 and 9 miles which take place between May and early September. Led by a member of The Greensand Trust with support from their trusty volunteers there is something for beginners who would like to try a relatively short walk, to confident walkers who prefer a longer stretch.

The 42 mile walk was drawn up in the 1970s to enable local communities to discover more about the wildlife and history of the area. It also aimed to connect valued countryside sites the wider footpath network, linking to other points of interest across the Greensand Ridge.

Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire County Councils worked together with Rambling groups to identify a route, working with local landowners to plan viewing areas and install signage. By October 1986, the route was in place, and formally opened in Woburn Abbey.

It is a great way to discover just how special Greensand Country is. Depending on which walk you choose you may explore open heathland, rich ancient woodlands, historic parklands and sandstone buildings
with friendly and likeminded people.

The £10 fee raises funds for The Greensand Trust charity, and includes coach travel for any of the non
circular walks.

Introducing “Oh Deer” – A new short film by The Greensand Trust.

“Oh Deer” is a short film by The Greensand Trust designed to spread awareness and understanding of the impact of wild deer on woodland.

At just over 3 minutes long, we hope that this short film will help to explain the sometimes-tricky message around deer management.

Working with artist and animator Rachael Presky allowed us to create a compelling and engaging piece of art to help convey this message in an accessible way.

This campaign closely aligns with the recent DEFRA publication regarding the management of deer impacts across England, published 20th February 2026.

This project has received £7427 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund administered by Central Bedfordshire Council via Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation.

We welcome use of the video by any organisation who would benefit from it.
