✨BOOK CLUB DISCUSSION - warning this post may contain spoilers ⚠️

📚Yesterday we discussed May’s book club read, The Crash by Freida McFadden, a thriller about a pregnant woman stranded in a brutal blizzard who is taken in by a mysterious couple, only to discover she may have walked straight into a deadly trap.

An impressive 90% of members finished the book, but we only voted to give it a rating of 2.5⭐ out of 5.

While many of us have enjoyed Freida McFadden’s novels in the past, there was a general feeling that the quality of her recent releases has declined. Several members commented that they much preferred her earlier books, particularly The Teacher and The Housemaid. Given that The Crash was one of five books she released last year, some wondered whether the rapid publishing schedule may be affecting the quality of her work.

We also discussed whether we’ve simply read too many of Freida’s books, making some of her trademark twists and endings easier to predict. A number of members felt that some of the plot twists in this book stretched believability a little too far.

The novel was frequently compared to Misery, with its themes of isolation, captivity, and psychological tension. One point of consensus was that there weren’t really any likeable characters, which made it difficult for many readers to connect with the story.

Overall, this wasn’t one of our club’s favourite reads, but it certainly sparked plenty of discussion and debate!

📚✨ June Book Club Pick Announcement ✨📚

This month we’re reading Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens.

Set against the wild beauty of the North Carolina marshes, this bestselling novel follows Kya Clark, the mysterious Marsh Girl, who has spent years surviving alone in the wilderness. Part coming-of-age story, part murder mystery, and part love letter to nature, Where the Crawdads Sing is a captivating and emotional read that has captured the hearts of millions of readers around the world.

Whether you’re reading it for the first time or revisiting it, we’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts at our next meeting on 2nd July.

Happy reading everyone! 📖

Here’s our TBR list for June.

Charlotte:
I’m finally going to finish the Empyrean series, which Jodie is happy about! It’s been a while since I originally read book 1&2 so they’ve been added as re-reads.
I’m starting with I Will Find You by Harlan Coben as this is being released on Netflix this month.

Jodie:
I’m looking forward to reading Quicksilver this month. It’s been on my TBR list for a while and I’ve heard good things about it… Hope I’m not disappointed!

What’s on your TBR for June?

Chrlotte's May reading round up!

Favourite read this month: Powerless by Lauren Roberts.
I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I decided to read the whole series! Book 2 wasn't as good but book 3 had me hooked again.

Least favourite read this month: The Wedding People by Alison Espach.
It was... boring. There were some good messages within the book but I kept waiting for something to happen and it just, didn't. I know people have been rating this book highly but it wasn't for me.

I didn't get to start Garden Yourself Happy so this has been carried over to June's tbr.

Jodie's May reading round up! 📖

Favourite read this month: Garden Yourself Happy
It's been one I've been looking for reading foe a while. It took me so long to read because every chapter made me want to get out and do the things I read about in my garden. my lawn has never looked better in the summer - usually its brown after all the heat we've had but Jonny says to keep the lawnmower cut a little higher so the grass is more hardy in sunny and dry weather.

Least favourite read: Half Hearted Queen.
I read the first book in this duology in December, which I gave 4 stars, and was really looking forward to book 2 release. It was a big let down. Not a lot happened in a large part of the book, a rushed end, and the FMC annoyed me throughout most of the book. My expectations were high for this book and they were definitely not met!

Special mention to Away With The Penguins.
I gave 4 stars on GoodReads but if I could give half stars it would certainly be a 4.5! Curmudgeonly 85 year old lady - I love a grump main character with a soft heart inside! a real feel good book, heartwarming and funny in places. Not one I would usually pick up off the shelf, but it was a library book club read and I'm glad I read it.

Have you read any of these? Do you agree with my review?
