Our journey started in 2019 when we took over the derelict 'George & Heart Inn', beginning a process of loving restoration to the bustling pub, restaurant and hotel you see today.
It's been important for us to use reclaimed or refashioned materials wherever possible, most of the furniture is pre loved and been given a new lease of life. Still to this day! We wanted to be creative and think of ways to not add more waste into the world, while keeping luxury and comfort at the heart of our design.
The George & Heart House is steeped in History; opening its doors in 1729! Once a coaching inn, it had a stables which stand behind our now 'stables courtyard'. It's been owned by a number of local breweries including Cobbs and Symond's of Ramsgate. In 1943, the building was damaged in the WW2 bombings, however some of the original stained glass leaded windows were saved (which you can still see in the pub.)
In 1953, 5ft of water flooded the building from a terrible storm and in 2006 further damage was done through an arson attack. Despite all this, this wonderful building hold us all continues to be a hub for Margate's communities and holiday makers alike.
The windows are wonky, the floors slope but it's all part of the building's charm and makes for a unique experience!
If anyone has any old pics of the George through the years, we woudl love to see them!♥️
