MAG (Mines Advisory Group)

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) Our vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence His solution was to set up MAG.

In 1989 ex-British Army engineer Rae McGrath felt compelled to do something to protect people from the crippling and often fatal threat of landmines. More than a quarter of a century later, this lifesaving work is still continuing. Setting new international standards for humanitarian mine clearance and introducing innovative concepts – such as mine risk education, community liaison, and flexible,

multi-skilled mine action teams – MAG has evolved into a major international operation.

"As MAG staff, we are like many other people, we were displaced and forced to leave our homes. The situation is difficult for everyone, but we cannot just stop and watch."

Under the supervision of the Lebanon Mine Action Center - المركز اللبناني للأعمال المتعلقة بالألغام and with support from the Embassy of Canada to Lebanon, MAG teams are clearing land in Chouf and Jezzine to help communities live and work free from the fear of unexploded bombs.

"People can now farm without constantly worrying about what might be in the ground."

More than 30 years ago, Khai lost his right hand in an accident while collecting scrap metal to support his young family in Quang Tri, .

Today, after MAG teams cleared over 300 explosive items from his land and the surrounding area, he can finally farm with confidence.

Safe land means better harvests, higher incomes, greater security for farmers like Khai as they grow older, and peace of mind after decades of living with danger.

Khai lost his right hand while scavenging for scrap metal to feed his family. He knew the risks. He had heard the stories since childhood, and having served as a soldier in the 1980s, he understood what explosive ordnance looked like and what it could do. Still, when a round object surfaced from the...

“Clearance has made our lives much easier, but what means the most to me and my family is the safety of everyone.”

In Phon Village, , unexploded bombs from past conflict once shaped daily life, limiting where families could farm, work, and let their children play.

MAG cleared over 20,000 square metres of land, destroying 27 explosive items and making land safe for seven households.

For Village Chief Mr Thongchan, years of fear around contaminated land have been replaced with relief.

Clearance has restored safety, stability, and opportunity in Phon Village, allowing parents to farm, build, and ensure their children grow up in a safer environment than previous generations.

For generations, families in Phon Village in Khammouane Province, Laos, have lived with the legacy of war. Unexploded bombs scattered across farmland and around homes has shaped everyday life, restricting where people farm, where children play, and how families use their land.

This week, MAG was at the Africa Regional Workshop on the Universalisation of the Convention on Cluster Munitions in Addis Ababa, , joining governments, regional organisations, civil society, and technical experts from across the continent.

The discussions highlighted both the progress made across Africa and the importance of continued collaboration to expand participation in and implementation of the Convention.

We joined discussions to share insights from our capacity development work and contributed lessons learned from supporting States to meet their commitments.

Thank you to the Implementation Support Unit and the Laos Presidency for bringing partners together to advance this important humanitarian agenda.

This week, MAG attended the NATO Defence Capacity Building Conference in Brussels, where discussions focused on how countries can better prepare for and respond to insecurity in conflict-affected environments.

MAG works with NATO on Weapons and Ammunition Management projects, including in Jordan to improve the safe storage and management of stockpiles.

By reducing the risks posed by unsafe weapons and ammunition, this work helps prevent accidents before they happen and limits the humanitarian impact of conflict on communities.

With 30+ years’ experience in over 40 countries, MAG continues to work to reduce risks of explosions and help build safer communities.

This week, a MAG delegation attended the Ninth Biennial Meeting of States on the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons at the United Nations in New York.

MAG joined States, UN partners, regional organisations and civil society in discussions on how to tackle the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons and reduce armed violence.

We were pleased to contribute to various side events with our partners, sharing practical experience from our programmes, including on the safe and accountable management of weapons and ammunition in different regions.

Across the week, MAG emphasised the importance of sustained international cooperation, practical support and long-term investment to prevent diversion, strengthen implementation of the Programme of Action, and ultimately save lives.

MAG is pleased to announce the launch of a new programme in , supporting the safe destruction of obsolete and excess small arms, light weapons and ammunition.

Working in partnership with the national authority in Mexico – Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional – and funded by the U.S. Department of State, the programme aims to reduce the risks posed by unsecured and surplus weapons, helping to make communities safer.

This work in Mexico is part of MAG’s wider regional effort. Across the region, MAG is working with national authorities and partners to safely destroy and secure weapons and ammunition, reducing the risk of them being stolen or diverted into armed violence.

We are committed to doing everything possible to help build safer communities across Mexico and beyond.

This week, MAG joined the Asia-Pacific Regional Workshop on the Convention on Cluster Munitions in Vientiane, bringing together governments, regional organisations, civil society, and technical experts from across the region.

Discussions highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and practical dialogue, reflecting the very different realities across Asia and the Pacific – from heavily affected states dealing with long-term contamination to Pacific Island States integrating humanitarian disarmament into broader development and security priorities.

As the region looks ahead to the Third Review Conference in later this year, momentum is building to strengthen cooperation and maintain focus on the humanitarian impact of cluster munitions across the Asia-Pacific.
