City of Trees is delivering a green recovery and tackling the climate emergency head on, through planting trees and restoring woodlands for the people and wildlife of Greater Manchester. Working with communities, organisations, and businesses to build an ambitious movement, dedicated to planting a tree for every citizen within just five years. Our goals
- Plant 3 million trees, one for every perso

n across Greater Manchester, within 5 years
- Restore our greenspaces and woodlands for the benefit of both communities and wildlife
- Inspire a passion for trees and woods

It's official🌳

We're thrilled to be part of the next four years of our national Trees for Climate programme. Over the last five years the programme has delivered a significant impact, and this next phase will go even further.

As one of England's Community Forests, we're proud that our network is joining forces with the National Trust, The Woodland Trust and the Community Forest Trust in a major new partnership, backed by over £260m in UK Government funding, to bring the benefits of woodland creation to more communities than ever, wherever people live.

Right trees in the right places for the right reasons. Here's to the next chapter!

Over £260m is set to create 9,323ha new woodland across England in the next four years.

This month, we're looking for volunteers to help look after some of our trees. Planted just a few years ago, they're now at the stage where a little extra care makes all the difference 🌿🌳🍃🌱

These early years decide whether a tree thrives for decades to come, and we'd love your help getting them there - think all the usual Tree-L-C jobs like weeding, mulching, and woodchipping.

Where will be?

• Thursday 9th July - Nicol Mere Rec, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan
• Saturday 18th July - Bowlee Park, Middleton, Rochdale
• Wednesday 22nd July, Westhoughton Central Park, Bolton
• Friday 31st July, Tandle Hill, Royton, Oldham

Just so we have an idea of numbers, we ask that you book a spot via our website below.

Book onto a volunteer day with City of Trees today and help to make Greater Manchester greener. All equipment and tools supplied.

We're proud to support the GM Green Spaces Fund. This fund is all about bringing quality, accessible, nature-rich green space to the people of Greater Manchester.

How are we involved? 💡
In our role as a delivery partner, our Green Spaces Fund Advisor, Nina, provides support to groups in Stockport and Tameside looking to apply for the fund.

What support do we provide? 🌱
We provide hands-on support to groups, offering advice on what makes a strong application and a step-by-step guide through the process.

If this sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, please get in touch with Nina at [email protected] or visit our website for more information https://www.cityoftrees.org.uk/green-spaces-fund/

The fund closes on 3rd August, so please get in touch as soon as possible so we can get your application underway.

Last week we paid a visit to our trees at Reddish Vale, and wow, what a transformation!

Since they were planted in 2021, they’ve grown from tiny saplings into thriving young trees! Look at them go😍

The story of our walks so far…

We’re excited to be hosting our walks for those living with dementia, their loved ones, and carers from May 27th.

On the last Wednesday of each month, we’ll be at Longford Park, enjoying a stroll in nature followed by cuppas and a craft.

These walks are a chance to enjoy the fresh air, get some gentle movement, have a chat, and relax in a supported environment.

We hope to see some of you there.

For more information, please head to the events page on our website - https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1989203441040?aff=oddtdtcreator

We bring tree planting days to schools across Greater Manchester. Free trees, tools, and a team to lead the day. Schools pay nothing.

Over 120 schools have taken part. Could a school you know be next?

✏️ Are you a teacher or headteacher in Greater Manchester?
We'd love to work with your school. Get in touch at [email protected] or fill in our application form https://forms.monday.com/forms/6d0536ac64e2835f0c6e14cc564ae1ad?r=use1

🌳 Are you a parent? Or know a school that could be doing this? Share this with your child's teacher, headteacher, or PTA, or tag them below.

If you're anything like us, you would have been swept up in marathon mania for the last few weeks. What you might not realise is that City of Trees are the official Green Runner charity partner for the Manchester Marathon!

So, what does this mean? If a runner chooses not to receive a t-shirt and/or medal, the proceeds will go towards supporting our work. This programme was put in place because, although many runners love receiving a t-shirt, the truth is they are simply not worn and end up as waste.

This year, 1,897 runners chose the Green Runner option, that's 7% of all finishers.

👕 1,504 finishers opted out of receiving a t-shirt
🏅173 finishers opted out of receiving a medal
🏅👕220 finishers opted out of both a medal and a t-shirt

This simple gesture has raised an incredible £5,949 to support us, which will fund the planting and maintenance of nearly 600 trees.

Read more about the programme here, and if you're signed up for next year's marathon, why not consider being a green runner? Earlier this year, we built homes for wildlife inside the trees of the Medlock Valley through a unique process called tree veteranisation.

Using a tool called a Piglet the team carved little cavities and nesting spots into the trees, set up cameras… and hoped for the best.

And guess what? Our very first residents have moved in!

We’re excited to see who else drops by, and who decides to stay for good. If you’re as curious as we are, make sure you’re following along! We’ll be posting regular updates over the next few months.

Want more on the how and why of tree veteranisation? You can read the full story here - https://www.cityoftrees.org.uk/tools-instead-of-time-tree-veteranisation-in-the-medlock-valley/

It felt like summer had arrived early this weekend, which means it's time to start watering our urban trees🌳☀️🚿

Newly planted trees are especially vulnerable during dry spells - without regular watering, survival rates drop significantly.

Our Urban Forestry Services team is out across Greater Manchester with our mobile bowser, watering trees that need it most.

If you're a local authority or landowner looking to protect your trees this spring or summer, get in touch to commission our watering services.
