Blending comedy with reflection, this performance celebrates the many ways people have expressed themselves across cultures and generations. Through playful encounters with ancestors from the past, it challenges colonial assumptions about masculinity and femininity while embracing the power of laughter as a form of resilience.

Join us for an interdisciplinary performance that continues the story of Lo-ting and the Tanka β€” Hong Kong's indigenous seafaring community.

Through live music, dance theatre, storytelling, and multimedia projection, Whisper from the Sea 2.0 explores Hong Kong's transformation from fishing villages to a thriving global city during the 1980s and 90s. As Lo-ting and the Tanka step from sea to land, they navigate changing identities, cultural adaptation, and the uncertainty surrounding the 1997 handover.

Blending Cantonese and English, the performance draws on oral histories, migration stories, archival imagery, and reimagined Tanka melodies to celebrate resilience, hope, and collective strength across generations 🌊✨

"Suspended Invocation"

Haleema Aziz is a mixed-media artist whose practice explores themes of migration, displacement, and belonging through intimate material narratives. Rooted in oil painting but expanding into woodwork, textiles, and sculptural installation, her work examines how personal and collective histories travel across borders and become embedded in objects, gestures, and everyday rituals.

Suspended Invocation emerged through a collaborative workshop with refugees and migrants, where participants gathered to share stories, memories, and moments of resilience. During these conversations, one theme returned again and again: faith.

One participant held up his prayer beads and said, β€œThis is all I need.”

That moment became the foundation of this piece.

Each engraved bead carries drawings made by participants. Fragments of memory, devotion, comfort, family, and home, transforming the piece into a living archive of collective resilience.

Experience this work at our Festival Launch and hear Haleema speak about her creative practice.

β€œThreads in Between”

Smriti Rai is a Nepali-British, Salford-based mixed-media artist whose practice is shaped by her background as a therapist. After stepping away from art to pursue a career in creative marketing, she returned to it during her counselling training as a form of self-care.

Drawing on expressive arts therapy, her work explores emotion, memory, and experiences beyond language, focusing on identity, belonging, migrational grief, and cultural memory.

Threads in Between explores disenfranchised grief in migration, drawing on the Dual Process Model, where loss and renewal exist side by side. Inspired by the Nepali ceremonial scarf Khata, the piece uses colour to express this emotional tension: white for loss, red for restoration, and blue for the β€œthird space” where new identities are formed.

The work also incorporates voices from the Nepali diaspora, with participants sharing what they have lost and gained through migration, represented through coloured threads suspended within the installation.

Experience this work at our Festival Launch and hear Smriti () speak about her creative practice.

β€œThreads of Becoming: Mapping Our Resilient Stories”

Blessing Wheto Ogunjimi (she/her) is a visual artist and socially engaged creative practitioner whose work explores healing, memory, cultural identity, and collective empowerment through mixed media, painting, textiles, and community collaboration. With over a decade of experience across Nigeria and the UK, her practice bridges studio art and socially engaged creativity.

Threads of Becoming is a mixed-media painting meditating on memory, migration, resilience, and belonging. Through layered paint, textiles, and found materials, the work reflects on rupture, repair, and the quiet strength of carrying stories across generations. Each layer becomes a trace of survival, transformation, and becoming. Rising against all odds.

Come and experience this work at our Festival Launch event, where you'll also hear Blessing () speak more about her work and creative practice.
