We arrived in Rijeka just after lunch time and headed straight to explore the city. Some of the things we explored on day one included:

- The clock tower
- The tunnels
- The cathedral
- Korzo (the level of self control needed for Jess not to purchase half of Zara was strong)
- The city Market

After a long afternoon of sightseeing we headed to our accommodation. Once we figured what cooking facilities we had (yes we have made this mistake before 🤣) we headed to the shop to get ingredients for the team favourite meal of spaghetti bolognaise.

Evening social activities included a game of cards that Jess did in fact not understand or win. Shock.

The next day saw us heading up to see the castle. All 550 steps to get up there! Everyone had strong words for Josh when we got to the top that’s for sure 🤣

The castle itself was beautiful and gave a view of the entire city! After visiting the castle we walked back down those 550 steps, gave ourselves jelly legs and then started our walk to the beach. Nose bleed on route slightly delayed our walk but nevertheless we made it and sat for a much needed dose of vitamin D.

We walked back to the accommodation and then decided it would be chicken noodles for Meal 3 as it was near impossible to consume anymore spaghetti bolognaise 🤣

We were amazed by the beautiful clear waters of P**a. A major military town, housing many forts built by the Austrian military to protect the harbour and port while the Istrian peninsula was under Austrian rule. This city was also a major strategic port for the Roman military, and remnants of Roman history still litter the town, with ruins found all over. One of the best known is the extremely well reserved amphitheater near the harbour.

While in P**a, we visited many of these sites:
- P**a Cathedral
- Temple of Augustus
- Arch of the Sergii
- P**a Arena
- Fort Kaštel & Zerostrasse Tunnels
- Fort Casoni Vecchi
- Fort Stoja

We had lots of walks along the coastline, taking in the beautiful scenery, and exploring lots of the history based in the city. The sunsets over the Adriatic Sea topped each night off as we watched the day end from the coastal campsite.

Day 4&5 Saw us head to the beautiful Italian City of Trieste.

Italian food is the best delicacy in the world and considering we have primarily eaten Italian food in both Croatia and Slovenia we were very excited to try authentic Italian freshly made.

The day started eventfully with us almost missing our bus to Trieste as the bus from Bled to Ljubljana was almost an hour late! Que Jess running across the bus station to catch the driver 🤣

Once we made it into Trieste it was time to do some exploring we visited:

- The grand canal (it is in fact not very grand)
- Giant Stairway
- Castello di San Giusto
- Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire
- Monumento ai Caduti di Trieste
- Teatro Romano di Trieste
- Piazza Unità d’Italia
- Rosa dei venti

After a long time sightseeing we decided to stop off for some original Italian Gelato were we met some Italian Scouts, we were able to have a conversation with them and share an ice cream together and grab a quick selfie ofcourse!

The evening we decided to try out the local cuisine which consisted of Pizza, Pasta and limoncello to wash it all down.

This morning we got up bright and early to enjoy a Trieste coffee (we had to seen as that’s what Trieste is famous for!) Before heading off to the Bus station for our next stop

Day 2&3

Leaving Zagreb, we got the FlixBus to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Did you know the total population of Slovenia is only about 2 million, and the capital has a smaller population than Wigan borough!

Ljubljana was only a quick stop to get some essentials from the camping store, and to get some food for lunch before jumping straight back onto our second coach towards our home for the next two days, Bled.

We all collectively agree that Bled was possibly one of the most beautiful places we’d ever been. The town is located in the foothills of the Julian Alps, which is the natural border between Slovenia and Austria. The views up to the mountains, and across the lake are stunning, and in the middle of that lake is Slovenia’s only island!

We took part in loads of activities while in Bled, including:
- Lots of walking around the lake, and up to various viewpoints around
- Night kayaking in clear boats
- Trying the famous Bled cream cake
- Ziplining on the ‘longest zipline in Europe’

Whilst in Bled, we also took the opportunity to meet many new people. On the ziplining tour, we realised that one of the guides was a Slovenian scout, so we got talking a lot about the similarities and differences between scouting in our respective countries! Also in our tour group was a couple from the UK, though one was from Wales, so sort of counts as meeting someone from another country, right?

Day 1&2

After landing into Zagreb airport in the evening we headed straight to the campsite to pitch our tents before going to find Pizza for Meal 3.

The next morning we were up and out early to explore the capital city of Croatia - Zagreb!

Whilst in the city we visited
- Lotrščak Tower for Cannon Fire
- Dolac Market
- Zagreb Cathedral
- Jelačić Square
- Art Pavilion

We ate meal 2 in one of the many parks and green spaces located across the city. The chosen delicacy was bread, ham and cheese. But no butter ofcourse, we are too fussy for that.

We also headed to the supermarket to buy ingredients to make meal 3 before quickly realising our hostel did not have cooking facilities so a quick meal out was all could be done.

We headed back to the campsite to collect our tents and big belongings and headed back on the train to the city to check into our hostel for the evening ready for our VERY early get up to head to Slovenia.

The evening was well spent with Croatian scouts watching the Movie about Florian, a French scout who cycled all the way to Korea for the Jamboree and luckily enough we got to meet him too!

Huge thankyou to the Croatian scouts for being so welcoming to us!
