The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Manchester is evolving. We are now called the Greater Manchester Y

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀. 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝘆. 💙

Seventeen children aged 8 to 12 from Charlestown and Partington Youth Centres came together for a summer trip with an important purpose: to give them safe access to experiences they may not otherwise have, while building confidence and friendships across two different boroughs.

Their day included:
🎮 Team challenges at Game Face Manchester
🍔 Burgers at Blacklock Manchester
🎨 Digital art and graphic design at Apple

One young person summed it up perfectly:

💬 “𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘱. 𝘐 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘧𝘶𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴.”

The day was made possible by Wood Street Mission, who fully funded the Game Face experience and meal, while the Bee Network provided free summer travel for the children.

With GMYF covering staff travel and ice creams, our total cost was just £26.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗠𝗬𝗙 💙

To mark 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆, young people from across our centres came together to launch our new 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲.

During their first session, they helped shape the identity, purpose and direction of the group from the very beginning.

Through discussions, ideas and activities, they explored what being a young leader means, the role of social action and how they want their voices to influence GMYF.

Going forward, our Young Leaders will have opportunities to:
💬 Shape decisions
💡 Influence programmes and projects
🤝 Represent the views of other young people
🌱 Build their confidence, skills and leadership

This is about more than simply asking young people what they think. It’s about giving them real opportunities to influence what happens and create change.

We can’t wait to see what our Young Leaders do next! 💚

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀

After 14 years as a solicitor supporting injured members of the Armed Forces and veterans, and 13 years volunteering at Moya Cole Hospice , Heather followed her pull towards the charity sector and moved into fundraising in 2022.

Now, this proud Salfordian is bringing that passion to GMYF.

Heather will be building relationships with individuals, businesses and funders who want to help us create more opportunities for children and young people.

From Charity of the Year partnerships and project sponsorship to fundraising, payroll giving and social value activity, there are so many ways to support our work.

As Heather puts it:
“𝘕𝘰 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸, 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨.”

Away from work, Heather loves the Lake District, Salford Rugby League, country music and her cockapoo, Mylo. She also owns a very expensive pair of cowboy boots and has an irrational fear of cows and masks. A cow mask would be her worst nightmare! 🤠🐄

And her first brew of the day must be Yorkshire Tea. White, no sugar ☕

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸? 🚲

BMX sessions are coming to Partington Youth Centre this autumn!

Three members of our Youth Work team have completed their Level 1 BMX Coaching course with British Cycling, thanks to the support of Access Sport.

The new sessions at the Cross Lane Park pump track will give young people the chance to get active, learn new skills and build their confidence while having fun.

𝗔 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲... 🏐

20 young people, aged 4 to 15, recently took on the adults in our Family Dodgeball Tournament at Charlestown Youth Centre.

The children were determined to stick together and beat the grown-ups. They gave it everything but, despite being seriously outnumbered, the adults somehow managed to take the win! 😂

One of our favourite parts of the day came from a young person who was visiting the centre for the very first time after hearing about it from friends.

At the start, they said, “I’ve never played dodgeball before.”

By the end? “Now it’s my favourite game.” 💙

A new activity, new friends and hopefully the first of many visits to Charlestown.

𝗠𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁. 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻. 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲. 🥾

A group of young people from Charlestown Youth Centre recently headed to Peel Tower as part of their Bronze The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, putting their map-reading and navigation skills into practice.

Using maps to find their way, they explored local routes, enjoyed the fresh air and took in some fantastic views before stopping for lunch near the top of the tower.

Days like these are about so much more than getting from A to B. They help young people build confidence, work together and enjoy the outdoors while developing valuable life skills.

𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 💙

Every time we visit Melland Youth Centre, it looks completely different, but this visit gave us the clearest picture yet of just how amazing it is going to be.

The rooms are incredibly spacious, the whole building feels open and the amount of natural light pouring in is fantastic. Even at this stage, it already feels bright, welcoming and full of possibility.

Work is moving quickly throughout the centre, and it’s now much easier to imagine these rooms filled with young people, activities, laughter and new opportunities.

The photos don’t quite capture the scale of the spaces, but we think you’ll agree, Melland Youth Centre is going to be something very special for Gorton. 💙

Greater Manchester Youth Federation is recruiting a 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗖𝗼-𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 to support the delivery of high-quality, inclusive youth work across our centres and communities.

It’s a varied, hands-on role that includes:

🏘️ Working across centre-based, outreach and community settings
🌲 Helping to deliver trips, residentials and holiday programmes
✨ Supporting projects that help young people build confidence

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 💙

A huge well done to Harliee and Harrison from Charlestown Youth Centre, who recently represented Greater Manchester Youth Federation at the Greater Manchester Youth Combined Authority .

After successfully becoming GMYCA representatives, they both challenged themselves further by applying to become co-chairs of the leadership team.

The process involved completing an application, meeting with the GMYCA team at Youth Focus North West (YFNW), preparing a speech and then standing in front of a room full of people to share their ideas.

Both spoke passionately about the importance of better representation for young people with SEND and those from minority and underrepresented groups 👏

Although they were not selected as co-chairs on this occasion, the confidence, courage and personal growth they demonstrated was an incredible achievement.

Just one year ago, neither young person would have felt confident enough to stand up and speak in front of a group. This was a huge step in their journey, and everyone at GMYF is 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 of them 🌟

This is exactly what our 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘂𝗺 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 is all about. Supporting young people to speak up, share their views, build confidence and recognise that their voices matter.

Well done, Harliee and Harrison. You should both be very proud of yourselves 💙
