𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘆, 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀, 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘁! 🏹🧗💦🌅

Ten young people from Charlestown Youth Centre packed plenty into their weekend residential at Ormside Mill Residential Centre.

They climbed, scrambled, explored the countryside, played football and frisbee, enjoyed home-cooked meals and somehow still found the energy for several rounds of their favourite game, “Imposter”! 😂🎲

There were a few nerves when it came to the activities, but the group supported each other, worked as a team and gave every challenge their best shot. 💪👏

Here is what the young people had to say:

💬 “This is my first time going on a residential. I enjoyed everything - it felt like a holiday.”

💬 “It was fun spending time with my friends. I loved the water activity.”

💬 “I enjoyed getting out of Manchester and being in the great outdoors.”

A brilliant weekend full of laughter, adventure and memories with friends. 💙✨

Great news for Manchester! 🎉

Manchester has achieved UNICEF Child Friendly City status in recognition of the work taking place across the city to support children and young people to thrive.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗲'𝘀 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀 💚

When we ask young people about their experiences, the feedback is often far more powerful than anything we could write ourselves. 🙌

After returning from our recent residential trip to Coniston, Blake from Partington Youth Centre created this video to share some of his favourite moments from the week. 📹

From climbing hills and exploring the Lake District to boat trips, new friendships and plenty of laughs along the way, Blake's commentary perfectly captures what the experience meant to him.

Following our recent residential trip to Coniston, we received this lovely message from a parent:

We know that for many families, the cost of activities, trips and clubs can quickly add up.

At Greater Manchester Youth Federation, we believe every young person should have the chance to feel supported, make friends, build confidence and try new experiences - regardless of their circumstances.

That’s why our sessions, activities and opportunities are 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 for young people and families. 💫

But while access is free, the value behind these opportunities is huge.

𝗔 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 🎨

Last week, our Tapestry Workshop group from Partington Youth and Community Centre enjoyed a brilliant trip to The Whitworth Art Gallery.

For some of the young people, it was their first time using public transport, giving them the chance to build 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, develop 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 and learn important 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 along the way.

The group also helped plan the trip through their Youth Voice sessions, making the day even more meaningful and giving them a real sense of 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 and 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

A brilliant day full of 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 and fun 💚

𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽. 💚

20 young people and 6 staff from Partington Youth and Community Centre, Norbrook Youth Club and Charlestown Youth Centre recently headed to Coniston for a week full of adventure, new experiences and memories at Water Park Lakeland Adventure Centre.

For some, it was their first time leaving Manchester, making the experience even more special.

Across the week, new friendships formed, confidence grew and young people who had only just met were soon playing football, joining card games, singing, dancing and chatting around the campfire.

“𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘰 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦. 𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦.”

One young person, who found the first day away from home difficult, later described the experience as:

“𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘺.”

There were some huge personal achievements too. One young person who had previously been fearful of the water spent two hours paddling and jumping in with confidence.

The change of environment also opened up new conversations and connections - from music and singing around the campfire to discussions about nature, wildlife and the outdoors.

Residentials like this are about far more than activities. They help build confidence, independence, friendships and memories that stay with young people long after the trip ends.

𝗔 𝗕𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗠𝗬𝗙 🌟

Last week, Tara McGuirk, our Duke of Edinburgh's Award Co-ordinator, attended The Duke of Edinburgh's Award 70th Anniversary celebration at Buckingham Palace 👏

Tara described the day as an experience she will never forget - and it was a brilliant reminder of just how far DofE can take you.

From trying something new, building confidence and making friends, to completing expeditions and working towards your award, DofE gives young people the chance to challenge themselves and create memories that last a lifetime.

Tara is now even more determined to support our Gold DofE participants on their journey to Buckingham Palace next year.

And with GMYF, our DofE programme is free to access, helping to remove barriers so more young people can take part.

And we’re off! 🏕️☀️

Today’s the day we set off for Annual Camp. The bags are packed, the kit’s loaded, the plans are in place, and our team have been working hard behind the scenes to get everything ready for a brilliant week away with our young people.

Camp has always been a special part of club life. It’s a chance to make memories, build confidence, try new things, spend time outdoors and just enjoy being together.
