Big news for our rivers and sewers!

After years of campaigning, the UK government have decided to ban all wet wipes containing plastic as part of its Plan for Water strategy.

Why does this matter?

Plastic wipes cause 93% of sewer blockages—including fatbergs—costing £100m a year to clear.

They also pollute waterways, harming wildlife and ecosystems.

This ban is a huge step toward cleaner rivers and healthier communities.

What can we all do to help?

Choose plastic-free alternatives and never flush wipes down the toilet.

Together, we can protect our pipes, rivers, and oceans.

That’s a wrap on Unblocktober 2025!

Even though October may be ending, we want to remind you all that Unblocktober is more than just a month.

It’s a movement.

To protect our drains, sewers, and seas continues all year round.

2025 has been a month of firsts, and we’ve accomplished so much:

💧 Hosted our first-ever webinar, sparking important conversations around behaviour change

🏫 Launched our brand-new Schools Tour, bringing drain awareness directly into classrooms

📊 Shared eye-opening survey insights about public attitudes and habits

🌍 Encouraged thousands to rethink how they dispose of everyday waste

Thank you for being part of Unblocktober 2025.

Let’s keep the momentum going:

✅ Make small changes at home

✅ Share what you’ve learned

✅ Inspire others to do the same

We can’t wait to see what we achieve together next year!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first webinar.

With over 40 attendees from across the UK, we explored why good intentions don’t always lead to better habits when it comes to protecting our drains, sewers and seas.

We had fantastic engagement from the audience, and our live audience survey revealed some powerful insights:

🔹 93% understood that fat, oil and grease are major contributors to fatbergs
🔹 80% recognised wet wipes as a leading cause of blockages
🔹 56% said the biggest barrier to change is the “out of sight, out of mind” mindset

Unblocktober 2025 is going beyond October with our school tour!

Over the next year, we’ll be visiting classrooms across the UK to teach pupils how to protect our drains, seas and waterways.

This year’s theme, Don’t Block Our Future, tackles the Kitchen Sink Crisis - the way we dispose of cooking oil and everyday items like wet wipes.

Through fun, interactive sessions, children will learn what really belongs down the drain, what doesn’t, and why these choices matter for our environment.

Every child who takes part becomes an Unblocktober Hero, earning certificates and stickers while learning habits they can share at home.

We’re looking for six primary schools to take part in this exciting programme.

Places are limited, so sign up here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eMSqc9ja

Three top tips for a successful 🛁

1️⃣ Get a bathroom bin: Keep those wipes and cotton buds out of the pipes!

2️⃣ Pop a sink strainer in: Catch those pesky food scraps before they cause trouble.

3️⃣ Chill, solidify, dispose your fat: Cool your cooking fats, let them solidify, and bin them to avoid blockages.

Let’s keep our drains clear and our environment clean! 🌍

During the winter months, food can be scarce for birds, and they need plenty of energy to survive.

One great energy source is a bird feed fat ball.

While you can buy them ready-made, it’s much more fun to make your own using leftover suet or lard - and it saves your drains from blockages.

You’ll need:

▪️ Vegetable or beef suet (or lard)
▫️ Bird seed mix
▪️ A mixing bowl
▫️ An ice cream scoop or spoons (optional)
▪️ Pieces of string

1️⃣ Mix 1 part suet/lard with 2 parts bird seed in a mixing bowl. Aim for an even spread of seeds throughout the mixture.

2️⃣Mould the mixture into balls with your hands—or use spoons or an ice cream scoop if you’d prefer not to get messy!

3️⃣ Insert a piece of string into each ball so you can hang them in your garden once they’re ready.

4️⃣ Place the fat balls in the fridge for a few hours to set. Once they’re firm, they’re ready to hang outside!

You're all set. We’d love to see your creations, take a picture, and we might feature you on our story!

79% of people have admitted to washing paint down their drains, which can contribute to blockages and fatbergs.

So, what’s the right way to dispose of leftover paint? Here are 4 simple steps:

1️⃣ Remove excess paint

Scrape any leftover paint from your brushes onto an absorbent material (like newspaper or old rags) and dispose of it with your household rubbish.

2️⃣ Clean your brushes the smart way

Rinse them in a bucket of water instead of under the tap. Leave the bucket overnight and the paint solids will settle at the bottom.

3️⃣ Dispose of the water responsibly

Pour the clear water onto your grass or soil, where it can safely soak into the ground. The solids stay in the bucket.

4️⃣ Handle the solids

Scrape out the dried paint solids onto an absorbent material and throw them away with your household waste.

Small changes make a big difference for our drains and the environment!

How do you usually clean up after painting? Share your tips below! 👇

Putting unflushable items down your loo is essentially invisible fly-tipping.

This , we ask you to take the pledge to not flush or pour any ‘unflushable’ items down your sinks or toilets.

Below is a glimpse into the most commonly found products in our drains, the full list can be found on our unblocktober.org website.
