Millions of animals continue to suffer from outdated farming practices, including male chick culling and the routine tail docking and castration of lambs.

The Government has committed to improving animal welfare, but these commitments must now be backed by clear action and timelines.

Andy Burnham has reaffirmed his commitment to animal welfare, recognising it as a moral cause and backing the Government’s Animal Welfare Strategy.

The strategy includes important commitments to end some of the UK’s cruellest farming practices, including male chick culling and routine tail docking and castration of lambs.

These commitments are a positive step forward, but now they must be matched with clear action, timelines and meaningful change for animals.

Progress for chicks 🐥

A new report from Innovate Animal Ag shows that 40% of the EU's commercial laying hens were hatched from eggs that underwent in-ovo sexing, saving millions of male chicks from being killed just hours after hatching.

✅ Since 2021, more than 281 million male embryos have been identified before hatching, avoiding the routine culling of day-old male chicks.

✅ In-ovo sexing is expanding rapidly across Europe and around the world, yet the UK is falling behind.

✅ It's time for the UK Government to commit to a clear timeline to end the routine culling of male chicks once and for all.

Our team supported the 10 year anniversary of the Manchester Pig Save movement, attending one of their regular vigils at Woodheads Abattoir in Colne, bearing witness to the cramped conditions and suffering of intelligent and sentient animals in their final moments.

The vast majority of people are wilfully blind to the reality behind the meat industry and the suffering involved. The Save movement works to expose this reality.
