The first edition of Nightgarden was launched in 2021, and has since grown organically from 50 to 250 participants by its fourth edition last year.

NightGarden is a celebration of audiovisual delights in Manchester's hinterlands.

LIVE PROJECTIONS · ART INSTALLATIONS · FOREST WALK · PERFORMANCE ART · WORKSHOPS We have programmed over 70 sculptural and interactive installations, live performances and workshops from the likes of outsider pop artists Stealing

Sheep, nature-sourced electronic musician Wildforms, live analogue VJ hellocatfood, post-internet video artist Mishka Henner, light sculptor Jenny McNamara and landscape storyteller Lotte Djikstra. More than a one-day event, this project has become a live testbed for interdisciplinary working. There’s a focus on inclusive and multi-generational co-creation with our core-team and over 40 volunteers. Our ongoing ambition of fostering a healthy commercial and organisational model, meaning ecosystems of people, money, power and time, echoes the curatorial interest in ecologies which underpins NightGarden.

Soaring vocals and playful electronics drifted through the trees 🌿✨

(aka Newcastle’s Jayne Dent) welcomed us into the forest with a spellbinding set beneath dappled afternoon sun. It was the perfect opening to our Decagon Stage and set the tone beautifully for our audiovisual gathering 💚

We were treated to songs from This Material Moment - her beautiful new album out now on
- highly recommended listening! Jayne’s out on tour with a full band this Autumn, so make sure to catch her live near you.

We’ve made something special for our fifth edition… ‘NightGarden Deconstructed’ 💫

This year, we commissioned our friend Harry Thompson - an architect, artist, and PhD
researcher - to create a bespoke, hand-drawn artwork that captures the spirit of NightGarden across the years 🌙✨

Look closely and you might spot...

🎩 colourful hats
🔷 a polygonal stage
🪩 an immense disco ball
🌀 a wondrous creative community
🐐...and some curious goats

We threw sponges at the moon, apologised, made peace offerings… and did the conga! 🌜🌸🪱

After our collective dinner, the creatures of the NightGarden forest led our audience on a journey to partyland. Our forest procession was pure magic - a bit ritualistic, but mostly very silly!

Endless love to the incredible drag clown fabulist and movement director .r.butler for conjuring the chaos, and to our magical boilersuit beings Holly, Gerry, Stef & Sean for bringing it all to life 💫💚

It’s been a joy seeing this special part of our NG programme evolve!
