Do you know about the Recycling for Good Causes scheme? Many soroptimist clubs and individuals use this scheme to raise funds for the Diamond Education Grant. It's a really simple scheme and the flyers explain what is recyclable and how it can be collected. The DEG has a stand at the Soroptimist conference in Cardiff this month, where you can bring your items or take flyers to give you the instructions for recycling from your areas. Recycling for Good Causes will now pay money raised directly to the DEG rather than the previous method of cheques. Our sincere thanks to all of you who already raise money for the DEG in this way. How much do you know about the Diamond Education Grant?
The mission of the Diamond Education Grant Trustees is to provide grants to assist women in advancing their education. Five Trustees have worked hard this year to assess the applications, select the right recipients and grant the awards. We have been ably led by our Chair of Trustees, Jennie Walker and we have now completed our third year as a team. The achievements of the women that have benefitted from the grants are successes for all SIGBI soroptimists, as we all contribute to the grant fund. It is so rewarding to read the stories of the successful women.

September 8th is our Diamond Education Day and we encourage all SIGBI clubs to engage with the Diamond Education Grant and perhaps to consider raising funds via the recycling scheme. (Recycling for Good Causes)
This charity offers a unique service for charities like the DEG by recycling unwanted items and turning them into valuable funds. Individuals wishing to help raise funds for the DEG can use this free service.
Clubs need to send in unwanted items and these are recycled to get money for the DEG. They recycle an array of items such as: unwanted watches and jewellery (anything from plastic beads to old broken gold chains); gadgets (such as cameras, games consoles, mobile phones, sat navs and MP3 players); old currency (UK & foreign) and used stamps. They have experts in place to ensure that all items received are individually assessed and recycled to get us the highest price possible. All this is done at absolutely no cost to you.

ADD A SPARKLE TO YOUR DAY!
We're starting to think about the Soroptimist International Great Britain & Ireland Annual Conference in Cardiff, which is fast approaching at the end of October. Trustees are keen to sell as many lanyards as possible ahead of the conference weekend. They are a bargain at £5.50, as well as a fantastic way of supporting this very worthwhile charity. Whether you are coming to conference or not, these lanyards add a bit of sparkle to the oncoming winter months. To secure yours either email trustee [email protected] or trustee [email protected]. The Trustees of the Diamond Education Grant would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to the members of Soroptimist International Bridgend who raised £500 for the charity. This amount is roughly equivalent to half of the annual award for one woman and so we are thrilled to receive this extra funding. The DEG makes grants to women who are in need of financial assistance for educational purposes. The grants enable the women to enter or return to employment, or move to a growing industry, by acquiring new skills. The educational grants contribute to raising the standard of education among women, who may not otherwise be able to improve their circumstances, those of their family, or the community in which they live. Following my post yesterday a number of people have messaged me to ask about how to obtain a 'sparkly lanyard' and raise money for the Diamond Education Grant charity. The photo accompanying this post has our bank and donation details. We still have a few lanyards left which would be £7 each to include postage within the UK. The more money we raise, the more women that we can give grants to for the next academic year. This month the President Elect of Soroptimist International Great Britain & Ireland (SIGBI) joins our board. The Diamond Education Grant was set up as a charity by SIGBI in 1972.
