Policy & Research | Digital Product Passports and QR Regulation

Wine labels are becoming a data infrastructure. Wine labels are evolving beyond packaging and compliance requirements into structured digital access points.

The strongest shift is currently taking place across Europe, particularly in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Portugal, where QR-enabled wine regulation and broader Digital Product Passport initiatives are reshaping information requirements.

Parallel developments are also emerging across North America, Oceania and Asia, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan and Singapore, while export-focused producers in Chile, Argentina, South Africa and Turkiye increasingly face pressure to align with international standards.

For producers and importers, the challenge may become less about QR codes themselves and more about whether product information can move consistently across markets and systems.

💬 Could digital traceability soon become part of your supplier selection or export strategy?

Country Watch | Angola: Distribution matters more than discovery.

Angola remains a highly import-dependent wine market, with more than 95% of supply coming from imports and Portugal maintaining a dominant position. The market consumes approximately 0.38 Mhl annually.

The primary tension is clear. Importers need diversification and margin resilience, yet consumers continue to reward familiar origins and trusted supply chains.

This creates a market where opportunity exists, but only for suppliers that can offer differentiation without increasing perceived buyer risk.

For 2025–2026, the key competitive battleground is not consumer trends. It is importer relationships, pricing discipline, and route-to-market control.

For Winemakers: (Export Gap)
Angola lacks diversification beyond Portugal. The opportunity is premium-value red wines and hospitality-focused portfolios that complement existing supply rather than compete directly against it.

For Importers: (Sourcing Opportunity)
South Africa, Spain, and Greece offer attractive diversification opportunities while maintaining familiar styles and commercially viable pricing.

For Buyers: (Portfolio Trend)
Selective premium diversification is emerging through premium reds and sparkling wines. Lifestyle-driven categories such as organic, natural, and low- or no-alcohol remain niche.

Market Snapshot | Imports drive the market

Central Africa remains an import-led wine region with negligible domestic production and demand concentrated in a small number of commercial hubs.

Cameroon and Angola serve as the region's primary import gateways, while Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo support demand for premium imported wine due to higher purchasing power.

Market performance is largely determined by distributor access, importer relationships, and the ability to manage landed costs across taxes, customs charges, and border complexity.

For many exporters, profitability is influenced more by margin management than volume growth, making market selection and route-to-market strategy critical.

💬 Which Central African market would you prioritise first for export growth, and why?

From the Vineyard | Spain: Familia Torres and Strategic Shift

In Catalonia, rising temperatures are no longer a future discussion. Earlier harvests, drier seasons and growing pressure on vineyard balance are becoming part of everyday reality. The challenge is not one difficult vintage. It is what happens when conditions slowly no longer fit the vineyard itself.

Familia Torres made a different decision. Rather than only adjusting vineyard practices year by year, they invested in higher-altitude sites, revived ancestral grape varieties, and expanded regenerative viticulture across their vineyards.

The thinking was simple. Cooler elevations can slow ripening. Historic local varieties may cope better with heat and water pressure. Healthier soils retain more moisture and improve resilience. Instead of reacting faster, they redesigned parts of the system itself.

Sometimes adaptation is not about improving what already exists. Sometimes it begins by asking whether we would build it the same way today.

💬 If climate pressure continues, what part of the vineyard system would you rethink first?

Policy & Research | Alcohol taxation reform

Public health policy is becoming a market access variable. Alcohol taxation is increasingly being treated as a public health tool rather than simply a fiscal instrument.

WHO guidance and regional reforms across Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, and Asia point to a structural shift in which pricing policy is expected to influence consumption behaviour.

For wine producers and importers, this matters beyond tax rates alone. Alcohol strength, category design and product positioning may increasingly affect competitiveness and route to market.

The wider question is whether alcohol joins to***co and sugar as a long-term public health tax target rather than remaining a conventional excise category.

💬 Could future tax policy influence which markets you source from or export into?

Country Watch | Argentina: The future is beyond Malbec.

Argentina produces around 10.5–11.5 Mhl of wine annually, yet domestic consumption has fallen to approximately 7.5–8.0 Mhl. The industry increasingly depends on exports to absorb surplus production.

The challenge is not production capacity. The challenge is differentiation. While Argentina remains strongly associated with Malbec, buyers are increasingly seeking regional identity, sustainability credentials, premium whites, and distinctive terroir-driven wines.

The market is shifting from volume-led growth towards value-led growth. Premiumisation, organic certification, high-altitude viticulture, and cool-climate regions are becoming more important than simple scale.

For Winemakers: Focus on high-altitude terroir, Cabernet Franc, premium Chardonnay, Patagonia Pinot Noir, and organic certification rather than relying solely on Malbec.

For Importers: Patagonia remains one of Argentina's most underappreciated sourcing opportunities, offering premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with strong differentiation potential.

For Buyers: Watch Argentina's high-altitude white wines. Chardonnay, Semillón, and premium Torrontés could become the country's next premium growth category.

Are you still buying Argentina for Malbec, or are you positioning for what comes next?

Market Snapshot | South America's growth is becoming value-led

South America enters 2026 with Chile and Argentina remaining the region's core export markets, generating an estimated $4.8–5.3B in export value and continuing the shift towards higher-value sales rather than volume expansion.

Brazil has become the region's most important demand-side market, with an estimated wine market value of $1.7–2.0B and projected growth of 5–7%, making it a priority destination for producers seeking regional expansion.

Distribution remains dominated by off-trade channels, accounting for an estimated 60–70% of volume, while on-trade continues to play a critical role in premium product visibility and market positioning.

Economic margin compression is the region's highest-ranked risk for 2026, ahead of water scarcity and climate exposure, increasing the importance of pricing discipline and channel diversification.

💬 For exporters and importers, which South American market currently offers the strongest balance between demand growth and commercial margin?

From the Vineyard | Greece: Alpha Estate and Choosing presence over scale

In Amyndeon, in northern Greece, quality was never the only challenge. Like many producers from emerging wine regions, Alpha Estate faced a familiar question.

How do you become visible in markets that already have established buying habits?

Rather than relying on one-off trade events or chasing large volumes of contacts, the estate invested in long-term export relationships. Repeated market visits, distributor engagement and sustained presence became part of the strategy.

The approach appears simple, but it creates something difficult to build quickly. Trust. Alpha Estate expanded into around 35 export markets, with North America becoming an important destination.

Export growth often looks like a sales exercise. Cases like this suggest it may be closer to infrastructure. Relationships built over time can become a route to market.

💬 Which creates more long-term value, more contacts or stronger relationships?

Policy & Research | Packaging Regulation and Sustainability Laws

Packaging becomes infrastructure. Packaging has historically been treated as a branding decision, but emerging regulation increasingly treats it as an environmental and cost variable.

Glass reduction, reusable-bottle pilots, packaging taxes, and Extended Producer Responsibility are creating new pressures across supply chains.

For producers and importers, packaging decisions increasingly affect logistics costs, compliance exposure, retailer expectations and long-term margins.
The next divide may not be between premium and non-premium wines, but between packaging systems designed for legacy perception and those for future regulation.

💬 As export markets evolve, could packaging become as important as the wine itself in sourcing decisions?

Country Watch | Nigeria: This is a margin market, not a volume market.

Nigeria consumes approximately 0.28–0.33 Mhl of wine annually, yet domestic production remains negligible. The market is almost entirely dependent on imports.

The primary tension is clear. Premium wine demand continues to grow among urban consumers, but distributor margins are under pressure from currency volatility, taxation, and rising import costs.

For Winemakers (Export):
The export gap sits between prestige wines and commodity wines. Premium-value wines from emerging regions remain underrepresented and have an opportunity to fill this space.

For Importers (Sourcing):
The sourcing opportunity lies in differentiated Mediterranean producers from Portugal, Greece, Türkiye, Georgia, and Armenia that can deliver premium positioning with stronger margin protection.

For Buyers (Portfolio):
The next portfolio trend is discovery-led premium wines, emerging Mediterranean origins, and alcohol-free alternatives that create premium perception without premium cost.

Nigeria is evolving into a curated urban premium market where value, story, and margin matter more than volume.
