Join us for an enthralling talk by distinguished geologist and engineer, Robyn Grayson, who will be shedding light on the remarkable underground world beneath Piccadilly Gardens and stretching all the way to Salford.

Robyn will present a series of colour slides, offering a full explanation of the extensive GPO tunnels that lie hidden beneath our city streets. These tunnels, once serving as a vital nuclear bunker and featuring railway tracks, played a significant yet secretive role in Manchester’s history.

This is a unique opportunity to gain insight into one of the city’s most fascinating and little-known engineering feats. Whether you are interested in local history, engineering, or simply enjoy a captivating story, this event promises to be both informative and engaging.

We are thrilled to announce that Manchester Civic Society’s nomination to have Apsley Cottage listed as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) has been officially approved by Manchester City Council! 🏛️✨

This is a massive win for local heritage and the community. Here’s why the Council agreed that this iconic pub deserves protection:

180 Years of History: Operating since the 1840s, Apsley Cottage is a historic staple of Ardwick and a vital piece of Manchester’s musical DNA.

A Cultural Landmark: More than just a pub, it’s a "well-respected and iconic" venue that has served locals, theatre-goers, and artists from the neighbouring O2 Apollo for generations.

Social & Economic Impact: The Council recognised its role in furthering the social interests of the community and its contribution to local hospitality and employment.

A Bright Future: Most importantly, the Council believes it is entirely realistic for Apsley Cottage to continue its legacy as a thriving community hub.

What’s Next? 🤞
The fight doesn’t stop here! We are also supporting a nomination by The Georgian Group to Historic England to have the building fully listed. If successful, this will provide even greater protection for this 19th-century gem.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign so far. Let’s keep the momentum going! 🍻
