Dads in the UK are still limited to just two weeks of paternity leave.

Yes, there have been some recent improvements. From 2026, paternity leave is now a day one right for many workers and slightly more flexible to take.

That matters, but the fundamentals have not changed.

Two weeks.

Low pay.

Out of step with modern families.

The government is reviewing the system, but right now, fathers are still being asked to support their partner, bond with their baby, and return to work almost immediately.

That is why campaigns like are so important.

Six weeks of properly paid leave would give dads the time they need and families the support they deserve.

Dads matter in children’s reading. But are we really listening to them?

Fathers often bring something different to reading with their children. Different approaches, different interactions, different impacts. Yet too often, their role is overlooked or undervalued.

So what are we missing? And what could change if we paid more attention to how dads read and engage?

👉 Our latest blog explores why dads’ involvement in reading matters and why listening to them is just as important.

We're looking forward to contributing to the Missing Mothers conference this weekend, hosted by The MTPT Project.

Our Deputy CEO, Jeremy Davies will be speaking on Saturday morning about why fathers must be part of the conversation on supporting working parents and retaining valuable colleagues in the workforce.

If you're interested in building workplaces that support families and enable both mothers and fathers to play an active role in parenting, this is an important discussion.

What role do fathers play in helping boys thrive?

In a guest blog, Alistair Strathern MP reflects on the challenges facing boys today and why positive male role models matter.

Supporting fathers and father figures is part of the answer.

When dads are enabled to play an active role in their children’s lives, families and communities benefit.

If you work in early years education or childcare, book your place now!

Most of the children you work with will have men in their lives who are involved in supporting and shaping their learning.

But many of those men will feel secondary or even unimportant - not realising what huge impacts they can have.

It’s time for us to change that.

⭐FREE Alliance Connect⭐ Why dads matter - rethinking parental involvement in the early years
Tuesday 24 March, 6.30pm - 7.30pm

Research indicates that fathers and other male carers have a key role to play in their young children’s learning and development. But all too often this key learning resource is overlooked and underutilised.

The Early Years Alliance is partnering with the Fatherhood Institute to promote greater awareness and support for men in their children’s learning, both in the home and in settings.

The session will also introduce the Fathers Reading Every Day (FRED) programme, which encourages dads (including biological fathers, grandfathers and ‘social’ fathers such as adoptive, step-fathers and other men with a caring role) to read and provide other learning support for 10-15 minutes per day for 4-6 weeks (depending on the child’s age).

Join Kathy Jones from the Fatherhood Institute and Michael Freeston from the Alliance to find out more about more about this essential topic, and how your setting can acknowledge, support and encourage participation from dads and male carers.

Please note this webinar will be held on Teams.
