💬 Intergenerational Heritage at Gorton Central 🏫

At Gorton Central, the room was full of lively conversation as Year 3 pupils from Abbey Hey Primary School joined local older residents involved in the Gorton Together National Lottery funded heritage project at Healthy Me Healthy Communities.

The session brought local history to life, linking the children’s learning about changing land use at Gorton Mill with residents’ memories of the area. The children came prepared with questions and were fascinated to hear that some participants have lived in Gorton for over 70 years.

They were amazed to learn the canal is now a footpath and that Gorton Central was once a paint factory.

To finish, the children stepped back in time and experienced what mill work might have been like in the early 1900s, gathering ‘cotton’ from the floor in a hands-on activity.

It was a wonderful exchange, with both generations enjoying the session. We’re looking forward to welcoming more classes next week, the end-of-term presentations, and visiting the school assembly to share our heritage work.

Care leavers cooking! 🥘

Our first Gorton cooking session at Gorton Care Leavers Collective happened last week.

Last week, our Gorton Care Leavers Collective got together in the kitchen for the very first time. The session was led by Ban, a community member who has just completed her Community Food Worker training here at Healthy Me Healthy Communities, a brilliant achievement!

The group cooked Iraqi aubergine stew. Some were hesitant, some found it unfamiliar territory. But they showed up, got stuck in, and got through it together - and that matters more than it might look from the outside.

When we asked what they'd like to cook next, they didn't hesitate. Shawarma and chilli con carne, Something they know and love, and something they chose themselves.

Next session will be led by one of the young people in the group. We can't wait.

📱 MCC Digital Inclusion and MAES team support our age friendly group with new tech! 💻️

On Monday, Julie and Emma from Manchester Adult Education came with Emily and Georgie from the MCC Digital Inclusion team to help members of our age friendly group set up their donated tablets. Many thanks to everyone for their generous donations and support!

This group has really been enjoying using tech as part of the Gorton Together Heritage Lottery project, and these tablets can be used during future sessions so that people can develop their digital skills in an embedded way.
