One World Together provides long-term, unrestricted funding to community organisations around world, enabling them spend the funds how they want & when they want to invest in their future. We help build strong organisations that can invest in their future development and respond quickly to challenges as they arise. One World Together was born out of frustration with existing systems of charitable giving. Despite the generosity of the UK public – who give £2 billion a year to development NGOs – most of this goes to the biggest charities, which are expensive to operate and operate through unequal partnerships. You can read more about that here. This means that whether you are a small organisation working with communities in the UK or globally, it is incredibly hard to access the best form of funding that builds your organisational strength, stability and sustainability. The case for long-term, predictable and unrestricted funding has never been clearer. Charities are trying to do better, but they’re working within deeply ingrained systems that are hard to change. So we thought we’d design a new system, free of these costs and inequalities that accompany traditional forms of giving. One World Together was born to answer a simple question:

For the past four weeks, we’ve taken you inside the everyday work of our four incredible partners 🌍

A football pitch in Zambia, where the real work happens off the pitch, in making sure a coach stays long enough to be trusted. A mural in Kibera, painted by the young people it was meant to represent, not commissioned for them. A classroom in Kenya, where 97% of students graduate instead of the national average of 68%. A savings group in Manchester where someone’s crisis gets met within the hour, not months later.

Different countries, different challenges. But underneath every story is funding that arrived without strings attached, at the moment it was actually needed, from people who trusted communities to know their own priorities better than anyone outside ever could.

It’s a simple idea: when communities have trust, flexibility and long-term support, they can build the futures they want to see.

What does £5 a month actually build?

So far this week we’ve shared what belonging can build within a single savings group, and what it means to recognise the time and expertise community leaders give beyond their own neighbourhood.

Earlier this year Melanie Lombard, a trustee on board, got to see something even wider. Melanie joined us in Nairobi for our Community Building Summit, meeting the partner organisations that unrestricted Solidarity Fund support reaches right across the network.

Here Melanie shares what stood out to her, and why something as small as £5 a month genuinely makes a difference when it’s given with trust and flexibility attached.

It’s one thing to hear that from us. It’s another to hear it from someone who sits on a partner’s board and has now seen what that trust builds elsewhere too.

Community organising asks a lot of people. Local action in your own neighbourhood, the kind that builds real social justice, runs on voluntary time and always will.

But Community Savers / CLASS also draws a line around something else: the public speaking, teaching and higher-level engagements that groups take on beyond their own community. Sharing what they know with others facing similar challenges elsewhere in the network. That work takes real time and effort, and it deserves to be recognised as such.

That’s why CLASS runs a Consultancy Fund, allowing affiliated groups to submit invoices for the services they’ve provided above and beyond their local work. Some of the Solidarity Fund contributions from the One World Together community go towards supporting it.

The intention isn’t to create jobs. It’s to remove the barriers that might otherwise stop people taking part at all. The money is paid to the group and the group decides collectively how to use it.

Trust-based funding invests in relationships, not just outputs. 🤝

Savings groups linked to Community Savers / CLASS meet regularly in trusted local spaces. Often, they’re the first to know when someone is facing a crisis.

A sudden hospital admission. A utility bill that arrives at the worst possible time.

Most project funding can’t be touched for emergencies like this, even though emergencies are a normal part of community life.

Solidarity Fund support from One World Together works differently. As the funds are given unrestricted, Community Savers have the autonomy to disburse these to groups immediately, without delays or rigid restrictions, so groups can respond the moment someone needs them.

It sounds simple. But it means support actually arrives when it’s needed, not months later once a form has cleared.

This is what trust-based giving makes possible. ✨

When Lynne first walked into a Community Savers / CLASS meeting, she noticed a small group gathered in the corner with little red savings books. Curious, she asked what they were doing. “I felt like I was missing out,” she laughed. So she joined.

At first glance, our partner Community Savers looks exactly like its name suggests: a network of savings groups across Greater Manchester and Sheffield, where people come together to save small amounts of money.

But the savings are only the beginning.

What actually grows in those weekly meetings, over breakfast in a tower block or coffee mornings and family feasts, is something much bigger. People start talking about what’s really going on in their lives. They discover the challenges they thought they were facing alone are shared by their neighbours. Someone struggling financially learns where support exists, and later finds themselves helping someone else navigate the same thing.

Lynne put it simply: “I’ve grown with this group. It’s taken me a long time to get here. Now I’m giving more and more, and really enjoying life.” 💛

Belonging doesn’t just make people feel connected. It changes what they believe is possible.
