Cheshire Wildlife Trust

Cheshire Wildlife Trust Together with our members and volunteers, we fight for nature's recovery across the region.

We are one of 46 local Wildlife Trusts across the UK from Scotland to Alderney, with a collective membership of more than 800,000 people.

*Our House Rules*
We love to hear from our members and supporters, to see your photos and hear your ideas and suggestions. All we ask is that users are respectful of others and keep their posts polite, civil and suitable for all ages. We do not tolerate any con

tent that is offensive or abusive including material that is obscene, violent, aggressive, argumentative, harassing, defamatory, unlawful, insulting, indecent or otherwise objectionable. This includes any language that can be construed as offensive, sexist, racist or homophobic. Please note that we retain the right to hide or remove any comments that we consider inappropriate. This extends to spamming and any material judged to be off-topic in subject-specific areas. We retain the right to block individuals who repeatedly ignore this policy and post inappropriate content on our page. In these cases warnings will be give beforehand.

*Moderation policy*
In general, we don’t moderate posts on our page or groups – except when offensive language is used or libellous allegations are made. We have a duty to protect our staff and volunteers, so while deleting comments is a last resort and very unusual, our position is that any post containing libellous accusations should be removed. If an individual continues to post content contrary to our House Rules (see above) then we’ll be forced to block that person from the page, but we would prefer not to do this and warnings will be given beforehand.

Volunteers’ Week: The people who gave wildlife 149 years of their time, in just one year. 🦔🐝🌳

As Volunteers’ Week shines a light on the power of giving time, the Wildlife Trusts are celebrating an extraordinary collective effort. Across the movement, 35,771 volunteers contributed more than 1.3 million hours last year, the equivalent of 149 years of non‑stop action for nature!

From muddy boots to meticulous surveys, their commitment proves that when people come together, nature benefits on an epic scale. 💚

This week’s theme is all about helping nature where you live, and our ecology team have been doing just that through water vole surveys at one of our monitoring sites.

They’ve been carefully surveying ditches across a large area, looking for signs of the elusive water vole. Clues of their presence can include burrows in the riverbank, piles of nibbled grass and stems often found by the water’s edge, showing a distinctive 45-degree angled cut at the ends, as well as latrines of rounded, cigar-shaped droppings. 🐾

See photos for the water vole burrow, latrine and feeding remains recorded by the team 🔍

A hidden crisis is unfolding beneath the waves 🌊

Every year, thousands of seabirds, whales, dolphins and seals are accidentally caught in fishing gear – this is called bycatch.

The numbers are shocking but there is good news! Solutions already exist, and with stronger UK Government action marine wildlife across UK seas can be better protected.

A big thank you to the Broxton Barn Owl Group for visiting one of our nature reserves earlier this week and supporting our ongoing barn owl monitoring work! 🦉💚

During their visit, they discovered an incredible 11 barn owl chicks across two nest boxes, a fantastic sign for the local population!

All monitoring is carried out responsibly and under the appropriate licence to ensure the welfare of these amazing birds.
