Our Lady without hands is almost complete, and has been joined by Our Lady from Dingwall, a lifesize piece requiring a complete makeover, which arrived on Monday!

So at the Abbey I was presented with a box of hands! The monk asked if I would like a body too. He took me to an outbuilding and there was a sad Madonna, hopefully the owner of two of the hands!
It will be a busy week!

Preparation for the arrival of a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at the church of the same name, in Banff, the county town of Banffshire, which has a long association with Carmelites in Scotland.
Busy cleaning stonework, which is a margin outside my comfort zone!

I have based the identity of the black statue on Blessed Anne of St Bartholomew, who was the companion and nurse to St Teresa of Avila. She has no scapular or rosary. A humble soul who rose to glory by founding Carmelite monasteries in France and Belgium.

A mysterious statue has arrived from the north. As yet, not identified as a recognisable saint, and no identifying maker's mark.
Working on her reveals what may be a Carmelite nun.

There had been some deliberations about the demise of this statue, in its sad state, until the Feast of the Sacred Heart last week when it made its way into the church and ended up being the centre of attention.
I managed to convince Fr Andrzej it would be worth a restoration. It came home with me from Dingwall , and is now undergoing a hefty overhaul.
So far it has been stripped of layers of paint, filled, plastered and primed.

This little statue of Our Lady Star of the Sea was rescued from a collection of forlorn items hiding in a rather damp cupboard. It is made of wood, makers' mark SIC, Societe Industrielle de Ceramique, a mid-century French decorative firm specializing in hand-decorated religious figurines. Items were typically saints or traditional Breton fishermen.
However it has been repainted with poster paint and brown varnish which is not easy to remove.
Watercolours capture the beauty of the wood and allow the grain to show through, imaging reflections of the sea. Gentle effects. Watch this space.
