The Loughborough Ladies were entertained by the irrepressible Phil Beaken who brought along a collection of his curios, including police whistles, Babycham glasses and Pimm's jugs . He told us how he got them, interesting facts about them and how much they were worth. Apparently plastic Pimm's jugs are more valuable than plastic ones. This made for a very enjoyable and convivial evening!

"I'm Elaine", "I'm Julia" "And we are the Potty Plotters!" was the introduction to a thoroughly entertaining evening. The Potty Plotters have a regular gardening slot on Radio Derby every Sunday and also have their own podcast which they call their Plotcast. They have been gardening on their allotments for many years and have turned their experience and expertise into a comedy double act with hilarious repartee. I reckon that come the spring, all of us will be buying seeds to grow loofahs having been persuaded by Elaine and Julia of the multitude ways these wondrous natural creations can be used. Coffee/tea and a slab of homemade cake rounded off a very enjoyable evening in the company of the Loughborough Ladies.

The Loughborough Ladies had a grand day out! We meandered along the waterways to The Plough Inn at Normanton on Soar where we had lunch and then meandered back again. Relaxation, gorgeous scenery, a great lunch and best of all, wonderful company. Our thanks go to the Peter Le Marchant Trust for a fabulous day.

"Is it a wedding?" " Is it an awards ceremony?" " Is a royal garden party being held?" asked the people of Loughborough as the Loughborough Ladies arrived for their Ladies Day at Ascot party. Posh frocks and fabulous hats were on show. And Dawn wore her jockey's silks! We enjoyed strawberries and cream and cupcakes with fruity fizz. Our horse racing knowledge was tested with a fun quiz. We had scratch cards, a raffle and seriously daft games. But most of all, we enjoyed a relaxing evening in the best of company!

The Loughborough Ladies walking group wisely chose a walk in the Outwoods yesterday, which provided welcome shade and a gentle breeze. Afterwards, we enjoyed refreshments at Olivia's Cafe.
And then today, a large group of us treated ourselves to a cream tea at Ulverscroft Grange, seated outside under a canopy admiring stunning views across the countryside. Unfortunately, I was enjoying my scone too much and forgot to take a photo!

Dave Andrews, didn't disappoint us! He guided us through an entertaining, educating and fascinating history of the BBC. He began in the early days of radio, marking iconic moments such as Neville Chamberlain's sombre and bone chilling announcement that Britain was at war with Germany. We were taken through the early days of TV, sparking much nostalgia for programmes such as Watch with Mother. The late Queen 's coronation was a major event in TV history with Richard Dimbleby providing eloquent commentary of this historic event. And we were also reminded of Richard Dimbleby's hilarious April Fool's Day joke of the spaghetti trees in 1957.
As we travelled through time, Dave showed us slides and played clips of BBC milestones: the famous commentary of the World Cup final in 1966; the first Dr Who episode; the EastEnders Christmas special when Den served Angie with divorce papers; the wedding of Charles and Di and many more. We were reminded of classic shows such as Dynasty and Match of the Day. Dave succeeded in evoking many memories for all the ladies who had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

At Thursday's meeting we see the return of the excellent speaker, Dave Andrews, former BBC Leicester presenter and producer. He will be providing a history of Auntie, the BBC. It should be very entertaining.
The meeting is from 7:30 pm at the Good Shepherd Church Hall, Park Road, Loughborough. There is limited parking by the hall but plentiful parking at nearby Tesco. Visitors are charged £5 which includes refreshments and a room full of friends!

At our June meeting, our speaker, Jo Golby, dressed as a lady’s maid and entertained us with her talk “Top to Toe”. One of the roles of the lady’s maid would be to collect herbs, berries and plants from around the world to make the potions and remedies for her lady. If you wanted to dye your hair the starting point was a pot of stale urine which would act as a bleaching agent. Elizabeth 1 was a follower of fashion with her alabaster face aiming to look pure like the Virgin Mary which was attractive to males at the time. However, this look was achieved using a lead based make up Venetian Ceruse which possibly contributed to her death. Another desirable feature was for women to have a 17.5-inch waist requiring very tight stays and whale bones causing internal damage. Jo had us all laughing as she explained how they implemented these trends. A highly informative and amusing talk.

Earlier this month our walking group enjoyed sunny albeit chilly weather for their walk around Dishley Pool with beautiful scenery, birdsong and great company.
At our Craft Club we had enormous fun using watercolour paints to create flowery cards.
