Has anyone lost a ferret!
We think it was a ferret at the end of the drive near Dale farm, it had a chicken in its mouth! Managed to scare it and the chicken ran off.

Has any one seen Siddy the little black cat 🐈‍⬛ please ? He has been missing a few weeks now . We can’t find him and just want to make sure he is ok and try get him back home AGAIN.

Sonja Pedley
Of Great Longstone, sadly passed away on 10th September 2026, aged 72 years.
Sonja will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Sonja's funeral service is to take place at St Giles Church, Great Longstone on Wednesday 14th October at 11:00am.
Family flowers only by request please but donations if desired in memory of Sonja can be made to Ashgate Hospice at mettamfunerals.co.uk/donations

Humming Bird Hawk Moths -

Lots of people are still seeing these lovely day-flying moths, & asking what they can do to support them. Many will have migrated from further south. But they do seem to be moving further north as the climate changes, & some may over-winter and even breed here.

The adult moths seem to be feeding particularly on Buddleia bushes and Red Valerian flowers. Their caterpillars prefer to eat wildflowers such as Lady's Bedstraw, but have also been seen enjoying Red Valerian.

If they do over-winter here, the adults will be looking for dry places to 'hibernate', such as open outhouses or nooks & crannies in walls. Caterpillars will pupate in a cocoon in leaf litter (as ever - try not to be too tidy in your garden - never a problem for me!).

Similar to Bee hawk moths in flight but the Humming-bird Hawk-moth has orange-brown hindwings which is evident in flight. It has forewings that are greyish-brown and a black and white chequered body.The caterpillars can be found from June to October, but most frequently found in August. They overwin...

Thornhill House Care Home provide a lunch time meals on wheels service to elderly/vulnerable people within Longstone 7 days a week. We’re looking for a volunteer /volunteers to deliver the meals. This is delivered at 12:30 daily and we rely on the goodwill of volunteers to help us with this.

Early tomorrow morning (Tue 22nd Sept) Longstone residents Jen Bell and Rob Hattersley will be among around 40 people taking on a 42km charity walk through the Peak District to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.

The walk is being organised by Longbow Venues and starts at The Peacock at Owler Bar at 6.45am, taking them between all six of their venues before finishing rather closer to home at The Ashford Arms in Ashford-in-the-Water around 12 hours later.

The team is hoping to raise £10,000 in total and Jen has set herself a personal fundraising target of £500.
