Learn to love to read Learn to Love to Read is a local Wandsworth charity that believes becoming a confident reader will change a child’s life.

We work with toddlers, primary school children and their parents to make that happen.

Children, parents and staff enjoyed a special assembly with the incredibly talented Thiago De Moraes this morning. Thiago told us about the process of making a book, how long it takes and how he comes up with his ideas. The children enjoyed helping Thiago to create a new mythical creature and draw one themselves. Following the assembly, year five children were treated to a comic workshop. Every child in key stage 2 will take home a copy of The Phoenix comic so they can enjoy reading Thiago’s comics and those of other cartoonists. Thank you The Phoenix comic for your generous donation and thank you to Thiago de Moraes for a great morning.

What happens at one of our comic club sessions? Children and parents come together to find out why comics are so great, explore lots of different comics and graphic novels, meet someone who draws and writes comics online and then we make our own comics. Finally they take home a copy of The Phoenix comic thanks to the generous team The Phoenix comic. I hope Wandsworth libraries are ready for many requests for graphic novels from the families we are working with! Thanks Elissa Elwick for a great session online and thanks to The Rebel Reading Society for connecting us and all your support.

Thank you Laura Henry-Allain MBE for three fantastic assemblies today. The children loved hearing Laura read them stories and share her journey to becoming an author, screenwriter, song writer and more. Poor Laura’s hand was aching by the end of the morning after dedicating and signing so many books. It was also wonderful to have so many Reception parents and carers join us for their assembly.

Could you help us raise up to £2,500 – simply by hosting an advertising board outside your home?

We need 50 people to display a ‘Plus Rooms’ advertising board outside their property from the week commencing 28th September until 9th November.

Every board displayed gives us £25. 50 boards have been allocated to us, meaning we could raise £1,250! With the exciting possibility that this will be match funded, taking the total to £2,500!

The boards are:
• Installed and removed by the company
• Secured without nails or damage to your property
• Taken down promptly after the campaign ends on 9th November

National research shows picking up a book for pleasure among children and young people in the UK is at its lowest in 20 years. That's why, now more than ever, it's extremely important to get books into the hands of children.

Learn to Love to Read put over 1700 books into the hands of Wandsworth children this year! We hope our efforts can help change these stats.
