Southern Hemisphere fungi hunters, this one’s for you! 🌏🍄

As spring brings warmer days and new growth, it’s the perfect time to look closely at fallen logs, forest floors, mossy banks and your own garden. You never know what fascinating fungi you might find.

📽️ Fungi Film Festival here we come!

The joy of having 11 phone boxes to look after is that you also have 11 big topics to cover. Each phone box provides a new opportunity to learn and take part in something new.

So, you can imagine what we thought when we received the notification that we only had 3 days left to submit something to the Fungi Film Festival…obviously we need to r***e through our video files and get something submitted quick, care of Freddy, our fungi phone box. 🍄

Last year, we spent quite a bit of time recording the sounds fungi make using a Plantwave device. The device takes the electrical impulses the fungi emit and converts them into sound. We figured if we overlayed the sounds, we could create a fungi band.

🎶 The results give Kraftwerk a run for their money. We have created a new type of music called Electro Shroomz. The best way to describe it is dubious jazz played on electrical instruments. We hope you enjoy the musical madness. The fungi that appear in the music film are indeed the musicians.

☀️ It was a beautiful, warm summer evening and 8 GoodGymers came together to help spruce up the classic red phone boxes in Richmond. Box Walks have partnered with GoodGym to keep our red phone boxes in good order. 🧽

🏣 After meeting at the Tap Tavern, the gang walked over to Richmond Green to clean two phone boxes close to the "Ted Lasso" pub. These boxes are Bertie (with a focus on biodiversity) and Sophie (sustainable food). They tried out the quiz questions on biodiversity, then set to cleaning Bertie and Sophie with dusters, cloths and cleaners. Birthday boy Chris scaled a ladder to clean the roofs of the boxes. 🪜

🚶‍➡️ They then followed one of the Box Walks’ routes to the Vineyard to find Freddy, the fungi box and to St Matthias Church where Tilly, the trees box, sits proudly. Each got a thorough clean and featured in a few shots of the group. It was a fun task and the GoodGymers have agreed to make it a regular thing. The phone box revolution continues! 🎉

Did you know that more than 8,000 red phone boxes are standing on Britain's streets? 🤔

Walk past one in Covent Garden, South Bank, or our very own Richmond, and you might notice shelves of paperback novels, a defibrillator mounted to the wall or a meaningful way to help you protect the planet. 💚🌍

While no one is inside making calls anymore, the red phone box is far from forgotten.

Its job has just changed, and the story behind it is remarkable.

☎️ In 1924, the UK Post Office held a competition to design the new standard telephone kiosk. A competition that would see the creation of the iconic red phone boxes that have stood on London's streets for generations.

For the next 60 years, these boxes helped Britain connect. Then in 1984, British Telecom was privatised.

Phone boxes were now too expensive to maintain, and with the rise of landlines in homes across the country, increasingly unnecessary.

For a while, many stood empty, but since then, plenty of schemes across London have helped give these iconic boxes a new purpose, just like us! 🫶

Every one of our restored red telephone boxes shines as a reminder of Richmond's incredible heritage.

But none of it would be possible without the support of our local donors.

Thanks to them, we've been able to give these iconic boxes a new purpose, bringing people together, getting them back out in nature, and helping everyone take care of Richmond.

Friends of Richmond Green is a volunteer-led group dedicated to protecting and enhancing Richmond Green, one of Richmond's best public spaces.

From organising regular clean-ups and tree planting to preserving the Green's local character, FoRG are fostering community spirit while improving local quality of life, cleanliness, and the environment.
