In Richmond, the red phone boxes stand as one of the most iconic and enduring symbols of British heritage.

The phone boxes as we recognise them today were known as the K2 and were designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who apparently originally imagined these boxes in silver with blue/green interiors.

However, the Post Office, which ran the design competition Scott won, had already started using its distinct red colour for the visibility of its pillars.

Therefore, the same colour, which is now synonymous with the iconic British telephone boxes, was applied to Scott's winning design.

While many of the original boxes have disappeared from everyday use, some have been carefully preserved and redesigned.

In Richmond, they are now a part of our mission at Box Walks to give a greener purpose to these historic structures.

Walking around Richmond, you're sure to notice the iconic red phone boxes that have stood as a proud reminder of British history for generations.

But do you really know how those boxes came to be?

In 1924, the UK Post Office held a competition. Several entered, but only one design mattered: Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's. His iconic red box would become synonymous with London.

The K2 was a cast-iron kiosk, with a distinctive domed roof, gorgeous windows, and a bold red paint colour.

And initially, the Post Office rejected it.

They felt it was too grand, too expensive, and too imposing for Britain's street corners.

Thankfully, after a second evaluation and huge public support, the K2 was approved and started showing up across London.

Today, at Box Walks, we've given these staples of British history a new life.

Each one of our boxes helps give Richmond a simple way to reconnect with nature and their local community one walk at a time: https://heyor.ca/OkzyJo
