WEEK 5
GEOMETRIC CONNECTIVITY

This week's session asked members to consider minimalist shape and form to create individual pieces that contained an element of connectivity in order to join up to establish a larger final piece.

LEARNING
Members chose geometric shapes, bold primary colours, straight lines, and asymmetry.
They were required to not only plan their own individual work but also consider the collective larger piece. This meant the groups had to work together to form connecting patterns and shapes.
Aims for this session weretwofoldd. Firstl, for members to considerartworkk in terms of minimalist design, stripping back their more natural instinct to embellish.Secondly, to encourage joint working and planning between the group.

ART WORK INSPO: BAUHAUS
Bauhaus (meaning 'building house') was a German art school founded by Walter Gropius (1919-1933).
The concepts combined craft and fine art, emphasising simplicity and functionality. The ideas revolutionised modern design, merging art with mass production. Following the core principle of 'form follows function', a legacy of practical, stylish yet simplistic work was established that can still be seen in many aspects of architecture, art, and household design today.

What a day we had on Saturday 🎉
A fun, inspiring, super time was had at National Saturday Club visit to London.
Our club members had the awesome opportunity to go to the prestigious Central Saint Martins College, take part in activities, hear from other Saturday Club members from around the UK, and then head to the National Portrait Gallery.
Here, we saw the Cecil Beaton exhibition and then took part in a private workshop with the NPG team to create a collage piece inspired by Beaton's work.

Not only was the day filled with creative opportunity, but for our members it was a chance to get to know each other better, learn how to navigate train & tube travel, conquer some of their anxieties and see how our little club fits into a whole UK network.

The fact members were sketching in their art journals on the train ride home, tells us everything we need to know.
Buzzy, creative, adventurous young minds ❤️

Saturday sure is the best day of the week.

Huge thanks to the National Saturday Club, Shademakers UK Department and Wightlink Isle of Wight Ferries

MAKING YOUR MARK WITH PAINT

A very famous art work was broken down into 8 individual elements.
Each member had their own piece to work from. Without the whole artwork as reference, members had to concentrate on their own part.
We then put the work back together.
We think our members did a pretty good job, their work definitely maintained the Picasso feel.

LEARNING:
Without seeing the whole, and focusing solely on a part, it allowed members to consider the mark making process used, technique and colour mixing.
The accuracy of the whole piece when brought back together is less relevant, although in this case the members did really well. We were looking at if the feel of the piece had been captured through the techniques used.

ART WORK INSPO: Weeping Woman by Pablo Picasso 1937.
The work was created as part of a series, in response to the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
