SSAFA Wiltshire

SSAFA Wiltshire We are the Wiltshire branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, providing trusted support to our Forces and their families.

Through two World Wars and every subsequent conflict involving UK Forces, SSAFA – The Armed Forces Charity - has been here for our servicemen and women and their families. The ability to adapt quickly to their needs is still at the heart of everything we do. We never stand still, so our new services provide vital support wherever and whenever it is most needed. Our work in Wiltshire and Swindon is carried out entirely by volunteers who are Committed, Practical and Understanding:

Committed - Our lifelong support for our Forces and their families is reflected in everything we do. So if you need help, we’ll be here for you, through thick and thin, until the job is done. Practical - SSAFA is a charity that does whatever it takes to get things done. We provide practical support and assistance to servicemen and women, veterans, and their families, every day of the year. Understanding - We understand that your time in the Forces can have an impact, now and in the future. But the challenges everyone faces are different, so whatever the problem, we’ll find a way to solve it.

Celebrating our amazing SSAFA volunteers.

Huge congratulations to seven of our dedicated SSAFA volunteers, who were recognised at our AGM in Corsham for their outstanding long service and commitment. Four volunteers, Rosina Bellis, Steve Parham, Tim Myers and Bob Bailey all received James Gildea awards, whilst Bob, along with Charles Monk, Trish Meek and Ken Scott were awarded Long Service certificates by our Vice President, David Couzens. All have made significant contributions to the work of SSAFA, and these awards represent recognition of the time, care and dedication they have given in their unstinting support to serving personnel, veterans and their families.

Thank you for everything you do, your commitment makes a real difference.

Did you know that in conjunction with the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, SSAFA helps members of the Merchant Navy who have supported the British Armed Forces in conflict zones?

On Merchant Navy Day, the Royal Naval Association encourages all branches and members to fly the Red Ensign in recognition of the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy.

Their service has been vital to our nation's history, security, and prosperity. Let us honour their legacy and show our support by proudly raising the flag that represents Britain's merchant seafarers.

Fly the Red Ensign. Honour the Merchant Navy.

This looks like good news!

From 1 September 2026, eligible working Service families who live in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can get help with early years childcare costs.

If you would get 'free' (Government funded) childcare hours if based in England, Defence’s UK Nursery Authority (UKNA) childcare scheme will now help cover the difference in cost where you live.

It’s important to understand that UKNA does not give you a childcare space. It pays back money to eligible families who have already paid for early years childcare.

Who is eligible for UKNA

You may register for UKNA, if all the following apply:
You are a Regular or Full-Time Reserve (Full Commitment) member of the Service
Your family lives in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland
Both parents (or the sole parent in a single-parent family) earn at least the same as 16 hours a week at the UK National Minimum or Living Wage
Neither parent (or the sole parent) earns more than £100,000 adjusted net income a year
Your child is recorded and verified on JPA
Your child is aged 9 months to 3 years old, in Scotland and Wales
Your child is aged 9 months to 4 years old, in Northern Ireland
You have an active Tax-Free Childcare (TFC) account for your child: ‘active’ means you confirm your details every three months and get the top-up from HMRC when you add money
Your childcare provider accepts TFC payments – all UKNA claims must first be paid through your child's TFC account
Your child lives with you at least half the time, unless you're separated for Service reasons
How to register and claim

Access registration and claims information via the UKNA section of Discover My Benefits
Read the DIN (available on defnet and Defence Connect)
Fill in and submit the registration form
Wait to hear that your registration is confirmed
Use the claims calculator
Submit your claim
Payment will be received within five working days of approval (if required)

Further step-by-step guidance is available on the Discover My Benefits – Families UKNA pages.

Important: what you need to know about tax

UKNA pays back money for childcare costs. HMRC counts this as extra income, so it's classed as a ‘taxable benefit.’ To offset this, Defence pays extra to cover any tax and National Insurance you might owe. This is called ‘grossing up.’

Receiving UKNA payments, and the extra 'grossing up' amount, can change how much tax and National Insurance you pay overall. It's important to understand this before you claim, as it may affect your eligibility for other government-funded allowances and Defence childcare schemes.

The grossing-up leaflet on the UKNA section of Discover My Benefits explains this in more detail.

Your questions answered: live Q&A session

If you would like to ask a question about the new UKNA scheme, you can join the policy team on Wednesday 30 September at 10.30am.

The session will cover eligibility, the registration and claims process, and potential tax implications.

To book your place, fill in the UK Nursery Authority families Q&A form. The policy team will then email you an invite.

We're still settling the scheme in

UKNA is brand new. As we roll it out, we may need to make small changes if something in the guidance isn't quite right or isn't working as planned.

If you have a question we haven't answered, or you spot something that doesn't seem right, email the team at [email protected]

The policy rules themselves won't change, but your feedback helps us improve the guidance, which can help other families using the scheme too.

Dear lovely followers, we need your help!

Can anyone in the Swindon/RWB area offer us a little bit of storage space, please - about the size of a phone box? For logistic efficiency, we'd like to be able to store one of our gazebos and some other gear in this part of the county.

We'd need occasional access, pre-arranged, of course. Please message if you are able to help! Thank you in advance from all of us in SSAFA Wiltshire! 😘

A wonderful initiative run by SSAFA for service families who have a child with an additional need or disability, whether these are physical, behavioural, emotional, mental health or a combination of these.

This week families have headed to the Calvert Trust in Exmoor, Devon to enjoy a week where they can reconnect and spend quality time together. 🫶

SSAFA’s Short Break scheme has been bringing families together for more than ten years. Offering a safe and inclusive time away for serving – and reservist – families who have a child with an additional need or disability, whether these are physical, behavioural, emotional, mental health or a combination of the above, these breaks are at the heart of SSAFA.

Applications for next years' trips will open in early 2027. To be one of the first families to know when the application process opens, join theForces Additional Needs & Disability Forum - FANDF and become a member today.

This takes the biscuit! 🙂 Highly recommended!

We were thrilled to be asked along to participate in this launch a few weeks ago. Members of our Community Engagement Team went along to chat to students and staff about SSAFA, and how our services can fit into their lives, now and in the future.

Let's get behind him!

Join us in championing local Swindon resident David Graham as he tackles his second ultra-marathon in just 21 days this Saturday!

Raising money for SSAFA, David's first ultra covered a total distance of 70 miles following Hadrian’s Wall from Carlisle to Newcastle with an elevation gain greater than 3,460 feet!

Now, just two days away, on Saturday 4 July, he picks up his trainers to complete the second and final ultra — a gruelling 100 miles from Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland to Edinburgh Castle, Scotland.
