Gloucestershire House currently has availability and is ready to welcome new residents.

Our team provides high quality, person centred care in a friendly and supportive environment. We take time to get to know each person, so care feels personal, comfortable and right for them.

Day to day life includes a mix of activities, social time and quiet moments, depending on what each person enjoys. Whether it is spending time with others, taking part in activities or simply having the space to relax, we support people in a way that suits them.

At Hill House, we are always looking at how we can give the people we support more choice in their care.

In this story, we share how our assistive technology team worked with Sam to help her play a leading role in choosing her support team.

Using her communication device, she now reviews applications, helps shortlist candidates and leads interviews by asking the questions herself.

This support means she can see how people communicate with her and decide who feels right to be part of her daily life. It is a powerful example of how the right care and support can build confidence, increase independence and improve everyday experiences for residents.

You can read the full story, including how our team made this possible, below.

At Hill House, the phrase ‘nothing about us without us’ is more than a slogan. For us, it is a commitment to putting people at the centre of decisions that affect their lives.

Meet Ashley 👋
He’s lived at Fethneys for several years and knows exactly what makes it so good.:

“One of the best things about Fethneys is the staff. They know what matters to me, and they help me to do what I want to do.”

Ashley is a huge sports fan and gamer. With the right support, he regularly travels to watch West Ham United, Northampton Saints rugby, and local teams — and when he’s happy staying in, you’ll find him watching films or playing FC26 on his PlayStation.

Just as important are friendships. Ashley and fellow resident Ryan share laughs, football banter and a real sense of community that makes Fethneys feel like home.

💙🏃‍♂️ 600 marathons - shared with a friend, and run for us.

This month, running legend Jagjit will complete his 600th marathon at the TCS London Marathon - a huge personal milestone - running alongside his long time friend Arnie.

They’ve supported one another through hundreds of races. And they’re marking this moment by fundraising to support disabled people living at Symonds House in Hitchin, helping ensure residents have the care, independence and sense of home they deserve.

Their story is closely linked to Symonds House, where Arnie previously volunteered and built strong relationships with the people who live and work there making this run especially meaningful.

Jagjit says:
“It’s really nice to do my 600th marathon with Arnie. Knowing we’re helping others gives us extra energy.”

Reaching 600 marathons is an incredible achievement, and we’re deeply grateful that Jagjit and Arnie have chosen to celebrate it by supporting people at Symonds House through their fundraising.

We also want to say a huge thank you to every single one of our marathon runners. Your commitment, fundraising and determination helps change lives.

💙🏃‍♂️ 120+ marathons - and still going strong for us

This month, Hitchin’s own “Arnie the Turbanator” is taking on the TCS London Marathon once again… his seventh time running this iconic race!

Arnie’s journey is nothing short of incredible: over 120 marathons across four continents. But this run is about more than miles and medals.

He’s running for the people who live at Symonds House, our residential home for disabled adults in Hitchin.

Arnie previously volunteered there as a driver, spending time with residents and helping them stay connected to their community. That experience clearly stayed with him and continues to inspire his commitment today.

As Arnie says:
“I’m really buzzing to run and I’m delighted to be doing it for something so close to my heart.”

We’re so grateful to Arnie, all our incredible marathon runners, and every person who has donated. Together, your dedication and generosity help disabled people live the lives they choose. Thank you!

💙 Please join us in wishing Arnie the very best of luck!

Meet John (on the right) - a lifelong tech enthusiast whose world opened up even further thanks to the support of our Assistive Technology team💡

John was already using devices independently, but older tech often left him frustrated and disconnected.

With personalised support, he now uses a new Alexa, smart TV, iPad on a floor stand, and adaptive tools like a Logitech joystick to stream content, control his environment, video call family, create digital art, and even design 3D models in TinkerCAD.

What changed isn’t just the tech - it’s the culture. Technology is now a shared experience in his residence, giving John space to explore, create, and even inspire others to try new devices. His confidence has grown, and his passion for learning is contagious.

With these tools, our teams can focus even more on what really matters: supporting disabled people and delivering high quality care.
This partnership forms a key part of our wider modernisation journey as we invest in technology for the people we support and the colleagues who work with them every day.
