If you see a duck, goose or other waterbird that appears very weak, unusually sleepy, unable to stand or walk properly, struggling to swim, has a drooping neck/head, or doesn’t move away when approached, it may be seriously unwell.
We don’t yet know exactly what affected this bird. Botulism and exposure to blue-green algae are possible causes, but similar symptoms can have other causes too, so professional assessment is important.
If you find a bird in distress:
Keep children and dogs away and note the exact location.
Don’t chase it or put yourself at risk trying to reach it.
If you can safely do so, take a photo/video to help rescuers assess the situation.
Contact The Swan Sanctuary, Shepperton – 01932 240790 for advice.
Avoid contact with suspicious algae or contaminated water and wash your hands thoroughly if you have handled wildlife.
We’re really grateful to the local residents and our coaching team who acted so quickly, and The Swan Sanctuary for taking her into their care. We’ll keep everyone updated on how she gets on. 💙

🌊 A brilliant day on the water at Brentford Community Boathouse!

We were delighted to welcome Swim London to our site this weekend and work in partnership to help deliver a fantastic open-water swimming event from Brentford to Putney a great open water event in the heart of London Borough of Hounslow

With blue skies overhead, just under 100 swimmers took to the water from our jetty, making full use of the Boathouse as the event base and enjoying a great day on the water.

It’s fantastic to see our site being used to bring different water sports and communities together, and to be able to support organisations like Swim London in providing safe and accessible opportunities to enjoy the water.

A huge thank you to the Swim London team, all the organisers and volunteers, and of course everyone who took part. We loved having you at Brentford and hope to welcome you back again soon!

What a weekend for Brentford Canoe Club! 🛶🏆

A huge thank you to everyone involved in organising and delivering such a brilliant weekend of racing and paddlesport at Nottingham — including Nottingham Summer Rodeo , Paddle UK Talent , Paddle UK and GB Freestyle Kayaking

We are incredibly proud of every young paddler from Brentford Canoe Club, part of Brentford Community Boathouse, who made the trip, supported their teammates, challenged themselves and represented the club so brilliantly.

There were some fantastic performances across the weekend and a special congratulations to all of our young athletes who raced.

For us, this weekend means even more because it feels like the culmination of a project we started two years ago.

With funding and support from Paddle UK, we set out to create a genuine pathway for young people into paddlesport — developing athletes alongside new coaches, giving children the opportunity to progress from their first sessions on the water through to structured training, racing and national competition.

Two years on, seeing Brentford paddlers competing confidently at events like these is a fantastic example of what investment in grassroots sport can achieve. thank you to London Borough of Hounslow for your support getting this project set up.

A massive well done to all of our paddlers shout out to Isabella, Felix and Ned we are so proud of how far our club you have come. And a very special shout-out to Seb, who put in a fantastic performance and came away with a win in the Rodeo event! 🏆👏

From grassroots paddling in Brentford to national competition — and we’re only getting started. 💪🛶

🚐 VOLUNTEER MINIBUS DRIVER WANTED

Could you spare a little time on a Friday afternoon to help support young people in our local community?

Brentford Community Boat House is looking for a friendly and reliable volunteer driver to help transport pupils from local schools to our watersports sessions.

The role would involve driving our minibus on Friday afternoons during term time, helping young people access rowing and other activities they may otherwise miss out on.

✅ Full UK driving licence required
✅ Previous experience driving a minibus or small van would be helpful
✅ Friendly, reliable and happy to work around young people

Even a few hours of your time each week could make a real difference to our schools programme.

🚣 **ROW FIT COURSE — FREE SUBSIDISED COURSE FOR AGES 11–18**

Looking for a new sport to try, or simply a great way to get active and improve your fitness?

Our new **Row Fit Course** starts this September and is open to young people aged **11–18**. No rowing experience is needed — all abilities are welcome.

📅 **Starts Monday 14th September 2026**
🗓 **Mondays & Thursdays**
⏰ **4:00pm–6:00pm**
📍 **Brentford Canoe Club, 980 Great West Road**
💪 **12 sessions over 6 weeks**

The course combines fitness and rowing-based training and is designed for young people who want to **try something new, get some exercise, build confidence and learn the basics of rowing**.

Thanks to funding and support, the course is **fully subsidised and being run free of charge**. We simply ask for a **£20 administration fee** when registering.

And there’s more — participants who complete the Row Fit course will receive a **subsidised place on our October Half-Term Rowing Camp**, with the opportunity to get out on the water and continue learning to row.

🚣‍♀️ Brentford’s First Away Fixture! 🚣‍♂️

A huge thank you and congratulations to all our brilliant club members who ventured down to Hayling Island yesterday to compete at the Langstone Cornish Pilot Gig Regatta.

We are so proud of everyone who represented Brentford, raced for the club and helped make it such a special day. It was fantastic to see our crews out on the water, competing together and putting Brentford firmly on the map!

A massive thank you to Langstone for all their hospitality and for making us feel so welcome.

We also want to say a huge thank you to all of our volunteers whose tireless work behind the scenes made the whole day possible. These events simply wouldn’t happen without the time, effort and commitment of everyone who helps organise, prepare and support the club.

And a special thank you to Mark and Patrick for towing the boats down to Langstone and making sure our crews and equipment could get there and compete!

Next up… the Great River Race on Saturday 12th September!

Come and support us as Brentford’s crews race their way along the Thames towards Richmond — or even better, come and get involved with the club yourself.

📍 PUTTING BRENTFORD ON THE MAP — AND ON THE WATER! 🌊

It’s been an incredible summer at Brentford Community Boat House, with more than 543 participants getting out on the water through our clubs, courses, camps and community programmes.

And now our clubs are fully up and running:

• Sprint Canoe Club
• Whitewater Club
• Rowing Club
• Cornish Pilot Gig Club

Whatever your interest on the water, there’s a place for you here.

Our aim is simple: to be the best community watersports club in West London — welcoming beginners through to experienced paddlers and rowers, while breaking down financial barriers that can stop people taking part.

We want to help people move from their first experience on the water into regular activity, club membership and a lasting community built around sport, friendship and the water.

More than 543 people on the water this summer — and we’re only just getting started.

A huge thank you to everyone who came down yesterday to support our community “shout out” to help tackle the growing problem of invasive aquatic w**ds on the River Thames and River Brent in Brentford.

Working alongside volunteers from the and the Hounslow Green Party , over 20 volunteers gave up their time over two hours to help us remove large amounts of aquatic w**d, including floating pennywort, duckw**d, water fern and blanket w**d.

A special thank you to Cllr for coming down, getting involved and taking the time to listen to our concerns, and to the for their support and help organising the day.

The River Brent plays a vital role in our community watersports projects, providing an important local space where we can introduce young people and the wider community to rowing, canoeing, kayaking and other activities on the water. Protecting and improving this environment is therefore hugely important to us.

At Brentford Community Boathouse, we pride ourselves on being part of our local community. Alongside getting people active on the water, we want to support community and environmental projects that help protect and improve the waterways we all enjoy.
