"It's not in the future, it's now."

In Glasgow's Gorbals, residents say their homes are too hot in summer - much more than other places in the city - and that's unfair and even dangerous.

Community leader Dani Waddell says local people are increasingly vulnerable to extreme heat and flooding, but don't necessarily realise that it's the effects of climate change.

As part of the recently-completed Creative Climate Futures project, Dani's worked with residents to understand what's happening and take measures to protect themselves in future.

Greener spaces, smarter house-building materials and better planning are among the solutions that Dani's community group Crossroads Youth & Community Association would like to see.

Is this something that needs considering for urban areas near you?

A Scottish Highlands expert is warning we're experiencing the 'perfect conditions' for wildfire to spread.

David Olds, a retained firefighter from Kingussie, says drier springs and hotter summers are putting local people at increased risk of wildfire once a spark ignites on dry ground. Carrbridge and Dava have already seen Scotland's biggest wildfires in living memory in the last year.

David's solution? Training local landownders to combat the growing fire threat.

He reckons local knowledge is key to not just preventing ignition, but helping stop a blaze from spreading as well. Because of this, he runs regular training for land management teams to learn how to communicate and react if a wildfire hits.

Would you feel prepared to tackle a wildfire if one broke out near you?

Is it possible for an English village to 'break up' with the national grid?

The village of Humshaugh in Northumberland is using renewables to monitor energy use and establish its grid independence.

With 30% of Northumberland households reliant on oil and power for heating, villagers wanted to find a more futureproof way to heat and run their homes.

The HELM (Humshaugh Energy Local Management) scheme involves installing solar panels and batteries on village buildings, monitoring their energy use, and gathering data from people's smart meters to help the community reduce demand during peak times.

Is this something that would work in your area?

We never hear GOOD NEWS like the 218 schools & 77 NHS hospitals that have fitted solar panels this year and lowered their bills.
Less doom, more positivity please! 🙌

"It's like you're not in a school."

Teachers in Kent are taking a different approach to learning.

At Herne Bay Junior School, kids are exploring nature to learn life skills like caring for animals, growing their own food and using water responsibly.

It's part of the school's bid to become a 'net zero' school by 2030, which they're also supporting with solar panels through the Solar For Schools 'rent a roof' scheme.

The idea is that by teaching pupils about nature and the environment early, their parents will want to join the journey too.

Would this work at your kids' school?

Farmers in Essex aren't just growing food 🌽

They're making the most of their unproductive land by giving it over to nature, saving money on inputs like fertiliser, irrigation and machinery in the process.

Lesley Gunfield of Moverons Farm in Brightlingsea has planted hedgerows and grass margins to connect up her land, as well as turning some of her fields into wetlands with RSPB.

Now, Moverons is attracting all kinds of birds from lapwings to oyster catchers, improving the biodiversity of their farm in the process.

Should more farms be making space for wildlife?

"How wonderful would it be for food to be seen as a human right?"

People in Govanhill, Scotland, are feeding their families with food waste.

Membership-based shop The People's Pantry has seen an increase in customers since it started during COVID, with people signing up to access fruit, veg, bread, flowers and dried goods, much of which is supermarket surplus.

Members can pay £6 to access the shop and buy the produce before it goes to waste.

How would something like this go down in your area?

Have you ever visited a repair cafe?

This fantastic video from Dawn - Fearny's finds gives you an insight into exactly how they work, and how they're helping families across the UK to save money and reduce waste.

We'd love to hear whether you have an initiative like this near you ⚒️

Can you really have a facial without throwing anything away?

Bluebell Beauty Lodge in Crowhurst, Sussex, is offering its clients 'zero waste' facials as a way of keeping costs down and protecting their woodland surroundings.

The staff don't use cotton wool, tissue or bed roll and there isn't any water on-site - that comes from the neighbouring campsite.

Alice, who owns the salon, says it's attracting more clients.

Would you give it a go? 💆‍♀️
