Liver disease is no longer a niche issue. It sits at the centre of global health, intersecting with obesity, diabetes, cancer and even dementia.

And yet, it is still too often overlooked.

As World Liver Day approaches, the international liver community is united around a clear message: we have the knowledge, the tools, and the momentum to change its trajectory.

Could restoring balance in the gut help people with advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD)? A new study suggests probiotics might play a role – opening the door to future clinical trials.

Find out more:

In advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD), the damage isn’t confined to the liver itself. Deep in the gut, a quiet breakdown is often underway. As disease progresses, the balance of bacteria in the...

New research co-led by Dr Vish Patel and published in Nature shows that in advanced chronic liver disease, oral bacteria can migrate to the gut, weaken the gut barrier and worsen liver scarring.

By also identifying a microbial gene strongly linked to disease severity, the study opens the door to new ways to slow progression and even prevent further complications, including organ failure.

A powerful reminder that the mouth, gut and liver are closely connected.

Tips on how to protect your health this winter from our partners at King's College Hospital NHS ❄️

❄️Temperatures are dropping this week in London.

During the amber alert, which is in effect until 11 January, look out for friends and family who may be vulnerable to low temperatures.

If you have a long-term health condition, it's important to protect yourself from the cold and any winter bugs:

- Keep your home heated to at least 18 degrees, if possible.
- Stay warm by wearing several layers of clothing.
- Get your free winter vaccinations.
- Seek healthcare advice if you start to feel unwell.
