🎾 Great news for our Health & Wellbeing activities in Greenwich! 🧘

We’ve loved seeing people getting active, trying something new and enjoying time together through our Greenwich Health & Wellbeing programme.

Over the summer, our Walking Tennis Programme has been keeping people moving and having fun, while Chair Yoga at our Abbey Wood Social Club has offered a gentler way to improve movement, strength and wellbeing.

Both activities have been made possible thanks to funding from Greenwich Healthier Communities, which comes to an end on 31 August.

But we’re delighted to share some brilliant news… πŸŽ‰

Our application to Sport England for funding to continue our Health & Wellbeing activities for another year has been successful!

We’re now busy planning our 2026–2027 programme, which will include:

🧘 Yoga
πŸͺ‘ Chair Yoga
πŸ’ͺ Pilates
🎾 Another summer of Walking Tennis

A huge thank you to everyone who has taken part so far. We’re looking forward to another year of helping older people in Greenwich stay active, connected and feeling good.

πŸ“Έ Here are a few photos of what we’ve been up to!

β˜€οΈ Hot weather is on the way – please look after yourself and others

Higher temperatures can have a serious impact on health, particularly for older people and those with existing health conditions.

During hot weather, remember to drink plenty of fluids, keep your home as cool as possible and avoid spending long periods in direct sun, particularly during the hottest part of the day.

Please also take a moment to check in on older or vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours. A quick phone call or visit can make a real difference, particularly for someone who lives alone.

The UK Health Security Agency has shared some useful advice on staying safe and well during periods of hot weather. Please take a look at the information below and share it with anyone who may find it helpful.

Stay cool, stay hydrated and look out for one another.

Every day, older people are staying in hospital longer than they need to because the support they need to return home isn't always available.

Age UK's latest report highlights the impact delayed discharge has on older people, their families and the NHS.

At Age UK Bromley & Greenwich, we know that leaving hospital is just the first step. We are proud to support people as they return home and recover through our:

-Take Home & Settle Service
-Post Discharge Settling Service (PDSS)
-Hospital Aftercare Service (HAS)
-Handyperson Service

Helping older people leave hospital safely, recover at home and maintain their independence not only improves outcomes for individuals but also helps free up much-needed hospital beds for those who need them.

Please take a few moments to read Age UK's latest report and find out why improving support after hospital is so important.

The Government and NHS leaders must take urgent action to tackle delayed hospital discharges among older people.

In our new report, The Longest Wait to Leave, we explain what must change to end long waits in A&E and corridor care. Explore our key findings: https://bit.ly/4bBCDYa

Exploring the world through food!

Our Greenwich Befriending Service social clubs and our Older Nepali Women's Group have been enjoying a fantastic series of healthy cooking sessions in partnership with GCDA.

GCDA provides the expert tutors, fresh ingredients and cooking equipment, giving our clients the opportunity to learn new cooking skills while discovering delicious dishes from different cultures around the world.

Last week our Older Nepali Women's Group cooked a delicious jerk chicken dish. Next week, our Abbey Wood Social Club will be creating a Somali-inspired meal, exploring the warm flavours of cinnamon and other traditional spices.

It's a wonderful way to bring people together, build confidence in the kitchen and celebrate the rich diversity of our local community. Thank you to GCDA for making these sessions possible! ❀️
