1 in 3 children will have an issue with mental illness directly linked to the experience of seeing domestic violence at home. Free Your Minds mission is to support individuals that suffer with mental illness due to the traumatic experience of childhood domestic violence. Through our workshops, awareness campaigns and support services, we aim to give them the tools to look after their own happiness and well being, and to promote the importance of having healthy relationships. Those who have dealt with a mental illness, know and have seen life in ways so many others won’t, they know a pain and perspective so many never will. You could say that those people have had a lucky escape, but we are the lucky ones. WE have faced incredible, tragedy, pain, confusion hurt and sadness and we are still here, still going, still trying, still breathing.

Our CEO and Founder, Natasha Benjamin, founded Free Your Mind CIC to provide children and young people with the support she didn’t have access to growing up.
Sadly, many children still face the same barriers today.

That’s why Natasha has brought together practitioners with lived experience who understand how difficult it can be to ask for help or talk about traumatic experiences at home.

Through Mindfulness CBT, Certified Trauma Play Therapy (CTP), drawing, painting, games and other creative outlets, children can express feelings and experiences that can sometimes be too difficult to put into words.

Today, as we begin Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, many women and children who have experienced domestic abuse will be feeling increased fear and anxiety following the news of changes to prisoner release arrangements.

The Government’s figures estimate 700 offenders are due to leave prison in England and Wales, with further 3,800 schedules releases planned over the next year.

For survivors, the impact of hearing that someone who has harmed them may be released early can bring back fear, uncertainty and trauma.

If you or your children are worried about your safety, you are not alone.

🚨 Immediate danger: Call 999. If you cannot speak on a mobile, press 55 when prompted.

This recent Guardian story highlights the experiences of UK mothers who have returned home with their children after fleeing abuse abroad and the difficult legal battles that can follow.

The UK government is now looking at how domestic abuse is considered in international child-abduction cases under the Hague Convention. To bring greater protection and support for survivors fleeing violence.

What do you think needs to change to better protect mothers and children fleeing abuse abroad?

And importantly, how can we make sure children’s safety and voices remain at the heart of these decisions?

Have you heard of or been in this situation like this before? We’d really like to hear your thoughts.

*Trigger Warning*

Imagine coming home from school and wondering whether your dad had seriously hurt or even killed your mum.

For a child, that level of fear is traumatic and horrifying.

Thomas Ross KC experienced this as a child. Before finishing primary school, he lived with his father while his mother had left Cardonald for England, fleeing domestic abuse.

That is an enormous amount for any child to experience.

Thomas has spoken about how his childhood experiences shaped his life and career, and he went on to become one of Scotland’s leading criminal defence advocates.

The children and young people we see who have experienced domestic abuse carry heartbreaking memories with them.

Please continue to support us, like, share, comment or send a donation. Help more child victims be heard and supported.
