How social prescribing helped one of our patients Outi rebuild her life.

After losing her home and business, Outi felt isolated and anxious. Her GP referred her to one of our Social Prescribers, who supported her to reconnect with others and find new confidence.

“The support I received through social prescribing helped me see there was a life still out there for me,” she said.

We are grateful to Outi for sharing her experience. Her story shows how connection and care can make all the difference.

Social Prescribers are based in every GP practice in Merton, helping residents find emotional, practical, and social support when it matters most.

On Monday 6th of October, our Social Prescribing team joined the Carers Event at Raynes Park Library, where many local residents came together to learn more about the range of services and support available for carers.

Events like this play an important role in helping carers access the information, advice, and wellbeing support they need. Caring for a loved one can be deeply rewarding, but it can also be isolating and demanding. By connecting carers with local organisations and community services, we can help ensure that no one feels they have to manage alone.

We’d like to thank everyone who came along and shared their experiences, as well as the partners and volunteers who made the event such a welcoming space for connection and support.

In Merton, 38 people died by su***de between 2021 and 2023. While our local rate is lower than the national average, every life lost has a lasting impact on families, friends and our wider community.

This year’s theme “Changing the Narrative on Su***de” is a call for all of us to speak more openly, break down stigma, and show that support is always available.

One simple step you can take today is the free Zero Su***de Alliance online training. In just 20 minutes, you can learn how to spot the signs, start a conversation, and feel more confident supporting someone who may be struggling. Scan the QR code here or visit www.zerosu***dealliance.com

For more resource packs, support services/helplines and information, visit: bit.ly/WSPDmerton

Every conversation, every shared resource, and every moment of compassion helps build a community where no one feels alone.

Your landline isn’t disappearing, it’s just getting a modern makeover! The UK’s analogue phone system is being phased out, and by January 31, 2027, most households will be using digital landlines over broadband (VoIP)

Here’s how you can prepare:

Keep an eye on your mail and inbox. Providers will get in touch with timing and instructions for your switch.

Tell your provider if you rely on special devices. Telecare alarms, care pendants, security or smoke alarms, and even fax machines may need updating or reconfiguring.

Plan for power cuts. Digital landlines usually won’t work in a power outage—keep a charged mobile phone or ask if your provider offers a battery backup or emergency solution.

Beware of scams. The switch is an opportunity for fraudsters to target people with fake calls or doorstep visits. Always use the “Stop, Challenge, Protect” principle, never share personal info or money unless you're sure it’s genuine.

The UK Government will be carrying out a national test of the Emergency Alerts system on Sunday 7th of September at 3pm.

Compatible mobile phones and tablets will receive an alert that makes a loud siren-like sound and vibrates.

The Emergency Alerts system is used to warn if there is a danger to life nearby, including extreme weather. Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly should it need to be used for reaching the public in emergency situations.

For those who need it, information on how to opt out is available at gov.uk/alerts.
