Yad Vashem UK Foundation 6 million Jews were victims of the Holocaust, it is our obligation to keep their memory alive. There were 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

Many have no one to remember them. Guardian of the Memory campaigns to ensure that the memory of each and every Jewish person is kept alive by someone today. Our aim is to sign up as many people as possible to become a Guardian of the Memory of Jewish individuals murdered in the Holocaust. In order to honour their memory, every Guardian will be asked to light a memorial candle on Yom HaShoah in memory of the person whose name and personal details they have selected.

Forbidden Voices brings back to life music and culture that the N**is tried to erase, honouring composers, musicians and communities whose voices were silenced, suppressed or banned during the Second World War.

Through music, we remember the people behind the history. We honour artistic expression that survived persecution. We reflect on the importance of preserving memory at a time when education, cultural identity and historical truth matter deeply.

A Bar or Bat Mitzvah marks an important life cycle moment in a young Jewish child’s life.

Through Yad Vashem UK’s Twinning Programme, Barmitzvah boys and Batmitzvah girls can connect this important milestone with their personal family history, and mark this special occasion by twinning with a named Jewish child who was unfortunately unable to celebrate their own Bar or Batmitzvah due to the tragic consequences of the Shoah.

Families receive a Twinning Pack which includes a Page of Testimony, Study Guide, Certificate, specially designed pin, and a personal letter from a Holocaust survivor. These educational materials help children and families learn about the Shoah, remember the child they are twinned with, and carry the memory of their story forward.

By joining the Twinning programme, families can also receive an additional service free of charge.

Add the comment “Twinning” to receive more information.

Alma Rosé, the niece of Gustav Mahler, was imprisoned by the N**is in Auschwitz-Birkenau, and forced to conduct the Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz. Yet survivors recalled that in secret she would perform music that the N**is had banned.

In a place built to erase identity and dehumanise its prisoners, music became an act of resistance. This is the spirit behind Forbidden Voices: honouring the music the N**is tried to silence, and remembering the victims who kept it alive.

Today we mark the birthday of Dr Marcel Ladenheim BEM, born on 7 June 1939. 🎂

Marcel was born in Paris to Austrian parents who had fled after the Anschluss in 1938. As N**i persecution spread through France, his family was forced into hiding.

During the war, Marcel was hidden by two sisters, Olga and Esther Masoli, who protected him for the duration of the Holocaust. His father was murdered in Auschwitz, while his mother survived.

After the war, Marcel and his brother moved to Manchester in 1948, where he later studied at Manchester University and built a long career as a dentist. He now lives in Surbiton with his wife, Bobbie, and has three children and five grandchildren.

On his birthday, we honour Dr Marcel Ladenheim BEM’s story of survival, family, resilience and remembrance. 🕯️

They stopped at nothing to murder every last Jew. We will stop at nothing to recover every last name

1944. The tide of war had already turned. The Allies were winning.
Still, the Germans spared no Jew - even at enormous expense. Entire communities were rounded up:
🚢 A ship for 2,000 Jews from Rhodes.
🚢 Another for 200 Jews from Kos.

🚢 One sent to collect Daniel Rachamim, the only Jew on Leros.
Names, families, communities - they tried to erase them all.

Yet one million names are still missing. Your support makes it possible to uncover lives still hidden and restore their names to memory. Help us continue this sacred mission - donate now.

Meet the Musician: Jaren Ziegler

Jaren Ziegler is a violist and 2025 Classic FM Rising Star.

In 2022, at the age of 16, he won the BBC Young Musician Strings Final, becoming the first violist in the competition’s history to do so.

Since then, Jaren has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, London Mozart Players, RCMJD Symphony Orchestra and Northern Chamber Orchestra.

He has also performed chamber music alongside leading artists and ensembles, and taken part in major international programmes including the Verbier Festival Academy Soloist Programme and the Kronberg Academy Festival Masterclasses.

We are delighted to welcome Jaren as part of Forbidden Voices of WW2, a concert dedicated to music that was banned, suppressed or silenced under the N**i regime.

During the Holocaust, music played different roles in ghettos and camps.

In the Łódź Ghetto, Yankele Hershkowitz became known as the “troubadour of the ghetto”. His songs reflected daily life under persecution, including hunger, fear, loss and survival. These fragments of memory enable us to connect fully with this individual’s feelings, legacy and life during the Holocaust.

After the mass tragic deportations of September 1942, street performances became harder to sustain. Many people could no longer “pay” singers with food, and many were no longer able to stop and listen as before.

The concert ‘Forbidden Voices of WW2’ continues this act of remembrance by highlighting suppressed and persecuted music and bringing it back into public awareness.

Join us for an evening of music, memory and remembrance.
