Today is International Women in Engineering Day 👷‍♀️

At the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) we’re proud to celebrate the brilliant women shaping the highways and transport sector - driving innovation, improving infrastructure and making a real impact.

Despite progress, women remain underrepresented in engineering. In the UK, just 16.5% of engineers are women, and within the IHE, women make up around 14% of our membership. We’re committed to improving that - through greater support, more opportunities and stronger recognition of the vital role women play in our industry.

This year’s theme, , is a powerful reminder of why inclusivity matters - diverse perspectives make engineering stronger.

We’re also delighted to spotlight Rebecca Bollen, IHE Junior Vice President, who has recently achieved Chartered status - an inspiring milestone.

Let’s keep pushing for progress.

Second day of visits in Bangalore for the Institute of Highway Engineers, packed with inspiring conversations and a warm welcome from industry partners.

The day included:
• A morning visit to AECOM, where we met engineers keen to progress through the professional review process, supported by a memorable traditional Indian welcome.
• An afternoon visit to Jacobs, hosted by Kezia Ann and the team, with a fantastic session focused on sharing practical insights to help applicants navigate professional registration with confidence.

Huge thanks to everyone who made us feel so welcome, and in particular to Vinay Kushalappa for helping to coordinate such a successful day.

Collaboration and conversations like these play a vital role in supporting professional growth and strengthening global connections across the highways sector.

The Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) is in India this week!
We’re delighted to be visiting India to promote IHE membership and support engineers on their journey towards professional registration.

Our team, including Martin Polland and Heather Suarez, has been engaging with colleagues at WSP in India, hosting valuable discussions on:

• Recognised professional qualifications
• Routes to EngTech, ICTTech, IEng and CEng registration
• How the Personalised Report route can help professionals assess readiness, identify skills gaps and plan clear next steps

These conversations are designed to simplify the professional registration journey and empower engineers to make confident, informed career decisions.

A big thank you to WSP in India for the warm welcome and for championing professional development and engineering excellence.

Turning systems thinking from ambition into action on carbon

Transport for London is now a Carbon Literate Organisation (Silver) with over 6,700 colleagues trained and a clear commitment to embedding carbon knowledge at scale.

This is what real progress looks like:
âś” Systems thinking applied in practice
âś” Organisation-wide capability
✔ Carbon‑informed decisions at every level

But no single organisation can achieve this alone.

That’s why collaboration across the supply chain, and between institutions, is essential.

The Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), The Institute of Asphalt Technology and The Institute of Quarrying are leading the way - supporting sector-wide capability through The Carbon Literacy Project training tailored specifically for highways and infrastructure professionals.

Turning net zero ambition into practical, everyday action with The Driven Company
