“Ultimately, being an outreach nurse is not just about providing treatment. It’s about building hope and empowering people’s knowledge and ensuring that no one is left behind when it comes to eye health.” – Ameer F***j

Our Sir Stephen Miller School of Nursing at St John Eye Hospital is the oldest provider of expert Ophthalmic Nursing Training in the Middle East, with over 185 graduates since its establishment in 1998.

One of these graduates is Ameer F***j, from the 2024-25 cohort, who now heads up our new Hebron-based outreach service. His role takes him to some of the most remote communities in the West Bank who otherwise may not be able to access vital sight-saving services.

Yesterday, the SJEHG team at our Nablus Hospital, led by Dr. Omar Abdul Daim, carried out an emergency vision-saving vitreo-retinal (VR) surgery on a 56-year-old patient. Acting fast was vital, as he had already lost vision in one eye due to a previous injury.

This shows just how essential our hospital in the north of the West Bank is to the local population as, if he had to travel to Jerusalem for surgery, it may have been too late to save this patient’s sight.

We wish him a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

The St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group were deeply saddened to hear of the passing last week of Denise Magauran DStJ, former Chief Surgeon of the Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and one of our most dedicated supporters, both through the Guild and the Gloucestershire County Priory Group.

Denise was an extraordinary woman – an exceptional surgeon, a person of great energy, enthusiasm and commitment, and a dear friend. She will be deeply missed.

A full obituary will follow in the next Jerusalem Scene, and we hope to do justice to her remarkable life and achievements.

RIP Denise, a true embodiment of the ethos of St John.

On Monday 2 March, we kicked off the centenary celebrations for the Guild of St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital with a fantastic reception at Chapter Hall, St John’s Gate 🥂

In the presence of HRH the Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO GCStJ, the Grand Prior of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, and the Lord Prior, Professor Mark Compton AM GCStJ, it was a wonderful evening celebrating 100 years of the Guild’s fundraising efforts for the Eye Hospital.

Thank you to the Grand Prior and Lord Prior, as well as Sir Andrew Cash OBE GCStJ, Chair of SJEHG, for their kind words about the Guild, and to Radhika Howarth for providing delicious Levantine canapés for the evening.

The SJEHG would like to thank the Guild, chaired by Sarah-Jane Holden CStJ, for their hard work, and to all who attended to mark this great milestone.

🧪This , we want to highlight the amazing work of our Genetic Research Lab.

In this video, Dr Alaa Al Talbishi, retina consultant and research lead, explains the importance of genetic diagnostic testing to find out more about rare, genetic eye disorders like retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and Stargardt disease.

Our state-of-the-art laboratory is expensive to run – but our research is vital in helping to find cures for rare eye diseases. By donating today, you can make a real difference to the lives of hundreds of families affected by inherited retinal degeneration.
