🌍Poverty isn't just a lack of income - it's a lack of basic human rights and opportunities.

On this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we are reminded that true change starts by breaking the cycles that keep communities trapped. At IRFF-UK, we tackle poverty from the roots up through our three core pillars:

📚 Education: Giving children the tools, resources, and schooling they need to unlock their full potential and build a brighter future.
🩸Ending Period Poverty: Ensuring girls don't miss school or face stigma simply because of a natural cycle, providing dignity and healthcare essentials.
🌾 Food Security: Fighting hunger by providing nutritious meals so no child goes to sleep on an empty stomach.

We cannot build a sustainable future without dismantling these barriers. When you support education, break down period stigma, and feed a community, you aren't just giving charity, you are empowering generations.

The Shine Literacy Centre in Walmer Township, Nelson Mandela Bay is such a joyous and love filled safe haven for these youngsters.

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers that give of their time to help these children learn to read, under the expert guidance of Pat Hippert.

💬 “I believe everyone deserves access to education, healthcare, and the opportunity to build a better future, regardless of where they are born. I am passionate about human rights and international development, and wanted to contribute to meaningful, grassroots work that makes a tangible difference in communities - that’s when I discovered IRFF.

Through supporting fundraising initiatives, I have been able to contribute towards causes such as education in Uganda and supporting vulnerable women and children in South Africa. For me, volunteering is about turning compassion into action and being part of something that creates lasting change, and with a strong community like the IRFF team, this can happen.”

Ayabonga Mkuhlu, a bright student from Joe Slovo township successfully progressed through school with funding from IRFF UK!
Ayabonga was part of the Slovo Study Group - a project that officially celebrated its completion last year after all the participating students successfully finished their high school education.
As we honor the diverse heritage of South Africa today, our ecosystem of community support keeps moving forward to uplift the next generation:

While our headquarters are based in the United Kingdom, our heartbeat is in Africa—where we work on the ground to break the cycle of poverty through education, healthcare, and tackling period poverty.
Because of this, you don’t need to be based in the UK to volunteer with us. Whether you are in London, Lagos, Nairobi, or New York, your skills can change lives.
We are looking for passionate global citizens to join our international network. You can mentor, assist with digital projects, share your professional skills, or support our campaigns right from your phone or laptop.

Most people assume volunteering for a charity means travelling to Africa or committing to something overwhelming.

It doesn't.

At IRFF-UK, our volunteers help from their laptops, their living rooms, and their lunch breaks. Social media. Fundraising. Writing. Admin. Research.

We're a small team doing meaningful work across five African countries - and we're looking for two new volunteers to join our team.

You can be based in the UK or South Africa. You just need a few hours a month and a genuine desire to help something real.

This legend will be sorely missed by IRFF-UK. A champion of the people, Estelle Ellis chose to fight heart and soul for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay.
