πŸ’š Grant Award: Bodmin Moorland Pony Rehabilitation πŸ’š

🐴 At Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust, we were pleased to support Bodmin Moorland Pony Rehabilitation registered charity no. 1167401, a small volunteer-run sanctuary, through an exceptionally challenging winter.

Our grant funded 194mΒ² of mud-control surfacing and stable matting, creating dry, safe shelter areas despite months of severe storms and extreme weather in Cornwall.

✨ Provided clean feeding and resting spaces for 6 resident ponies
✨ Created safe access for veterinary and hoof care professionals
✨ Improved welfare during one of the harshest winters the charity has experienced

We were happy to support these practical improvements to ensure the ponies remain comfortable, healthy, and well cared for when conditions are toughest.

πŸ’š Grant Award: The Fox RescuersπŸ’š

🦊 At Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust, we were pleased to support The Fox Rescuers with the creation of two new fox cub release sites in Wrexham and Lincolnshire, helping orphaned cubs return safely to the wild.

Our grant helped replenish funds used to build secure pre-release pens, provide food and bedding, and prepare young foxes for life back in their natural habitat.

✨ In 2025, the charity rescued 44 orphaned fox cubs and successfully released them
✨ New sites are expanding capacity for future rescues
✨ Careful rehabilitation helps cubs regain natural behaviours before release

One group of fox cubs came from very different beginnings: two were found wandering city streets, too young to be out on their own, and one was raised in a flat as a β€œpet”. Once in the pen together, they gradually bonded and played together before being taken to the new Wrexham release site. After a few weeks in the release pen, they were happily left to return to the countryside and live as wild foxes.

Images show the once β€œpet” vixen a week after her release, at approximately six months old.

πŸ’š Grant Award: UK Wild Otter Trust πŸ’š

The , a Devon-based volunteer charity, rescues, rehabilitates, and releases orphaned and injured Eurasian otters back into the wild.

Thanks to our grant, the UK Wild Otter Trust has been able to cover vital food and veterinary care costs. On average, it costs Β£3,000–£3,500 per otter to care for them until they’re ready for release.

Some of this year’s otter rescue stories include:

β€’ Morna, found alone on a pathway in Cornwall, weighing just 660g, now thriving at 2.25kg 🐾

β€’ Menai & Rocket, Menai was alone for 6 days after her mother was believed to have been killed by traffic. She was paired with Rocket, and they have both been released back into the wild 🌊

β€’ Karma & Kismet (pictured), both were found abandoned in a box by the side of the road but are now back in the wild as young otters, hopefully having some cubs of their own one day! πŸ¦¦πŸ’š

πŸ’šGrant Award: Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary πŸ’š

πŸ¦” Earlier this year we supported Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary in Hertfordshire with a grant to build a brand-new Volunteer Community Facility.
Volunteers now have a brand-new, insulated area to support their vital work: rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing wild hedgehogs.

The wild British hedgehog is on the IUCN Red List, with populations declining sharply:

πŸ“‰ -30% in urban areas and -50% in rural areas since 2000

πŸš— An estimated 100,000–350,000 hedgehogs are killed on roads each year.
Habitat loss, roads, fences, pesticides, and intensive farming all make survival harder.

πŸ“ˆ So far this year, the Sanctuary has rescued over 300 hedgehogs

πŸ’šGrant Award: Forever Hounds Trust πŸ’š

🐾 In Spring, we were delighted to support Forever Hounds Trust in Devon with a grant to cover veterinary costs for their rescue dogs.

From April to August 2025, the grant helped provide:

πŸ’‰ Dental care, neutering, vaccinations, and other treatments for 22 rescue dogs

🏑 Treatment for dogs like Dolly & Keef, after their owner was seriously injured in a car accident, both hounds suddenly needed a safe place to live together. After receiving dental care, they were successfully rehomed.

🐢 Freya, a 6Β½-year-old ex-racing greyhound, needed extensive dental surgery and has hip dysplasia. Despite her health challenges, she’s now settled in a loving home where she can take life at her own pace β€” no more racing, just comfort and care.

πŸ’š Grant Award: Protecting Peregrine Falcons with ESPA πŸ’š

πŸ¦… This year, we awarded a grant to Endangered Species Protection Agency ESPA to support their Project HORUS, protecting the UK’s iconic peregrine falcons by way of surveillance.

⚠️ Peregrines still face serious threats from the illegal egg and chick trade, driven by demand in the elite falconry market. While the UK leads in legal captive-bred falcon exports, this industry can also provide cover for trafficking wild chicks.

πŸͺΊ Thanks to ESPA’s tireless work, five vulnerable eyries (nests) remained safe throughout the 2025 nesting season. We are delighted to help them continue their vital work.

πŸ’š In 1982, Mrs Jean Sainsbury chose to use her inheritance to help others. Guided by compassion and a lifelong love of animals, she dedicated her resources to supporting smaller charities working to improve animal welfare.

From her vision, the Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust was born. 🐾

Today, we continue her legacyβ€”funding projects across the UK and beyond that protect, care for, and give voice to animals in need. πŸΆπŸ΄πŸˆπŸ¦”πŸ…πŸ˜
